Is a cheap air fryer worth buying?
Yes, with one caveat. The mechanism is the same at every price — a heating element and a fan — so a ₹3,000 fryer crisps much like a ₹9,000 one. What you are buying above ₹6,000 is capacity, build, a digital panel, longer warranty and sometimes a second basket. What you should not do is buy a 2 litre basket for a family of four to save ₹1,500.
Does an air fryer really use less oil?
Yes, and this is the one claim in the category that holds up. An air fryer is a small convection oven: a fan drives hot air past the food fast enough to brown and crisp it, so you need a brushing of oil rather than a panful. What it does not do is reproduce deep-fried texture exactly — chips come out closer to oven-roasted than to fried, and batter-coated food does not work well at all because there is no hot oil to set the batter.
How much electricity does an air fryer use?
Most are rated 1,200-1,800 W, but they run for minutes, not hours. A 1,500 W fryer for a 20-minute batch draws about 0.5 units — roughly ₹4 at ₹8 a unit. That is less than heating a full oven for the same food, because there is far less air and metal to bring up to temperature.
