What a used filter or RO element actually looks like after real service in a real Indian home — documented against a published protocol, with an explicit account of what a specimen can and cannot establish.

Photographs of filthy air purifier filters are among the most shared images in this category, and almost all of them are used to prove something they cannot prove. A black filter demonstrates that particles were captured. It does not demonstrate that the unit was working well, that the filter needed changing when it was changed, or that the brand in question is better than another.

That gap between what an image shows and what it is used to argue is why this section exists — and why the protocol below spends as much space on what a specimen cannot establish as on what it can.

The genuinely interesting findings from filter inspection are not the ones people expect. Bypass around a poorly seated gasket, which leaves a clean band while the rest of the medium loads. Uneven loading indicating airflow that never reached part of the filter. An RO element fouled orange on the feed side, in a household that had replaced two membranes without anyone testing the feed water for iron. Those are diagnosable from a specimen, and they matter.

What a specimen can and cannot establish

Published before any specimen, so it cannot be quietly relaxed later to support a conclusion.

The limits of visual inspection

The protocol

    Record the specimen's history before it is removed: part, brand, model, age in months, operating hours where a counter exists, city, and the environment it was used in.

    For RO elements, record feed and product TDS immediately before removal. Once the element is out, the single most important measurement is no longer obtainable.

  3. 3

    Weigh air filters dry, at a recorded ambient humidity, against a calibrated balance. Compare with a new filter of the same part number weighed under the same conditions.

    Photograph against a neutral background with a scale reference and consistent lighting, including the sealing gasket and its housing contact face — bypass is a more common failure than media exhaustion and it only shows there.

    Unroll RO elements only where the owner has consented to the element being destroyed, and photograph the feed side across its length rather than a single representative patch.

    State what the specimen cannot establish, on every published autopsy, alongside what it can.

    Publish the owner's consent position and confirm no identifying detail about the household is included beyond the city and property type.

Submit a specimen

If you are about to change a filter or a membrane, a few minutes of recording turns a piece of waste into something publishable. What we need with it:

  • Part, brand and model, and the unit it came out of.
  • Age in months, and operating hours where the unit has a counter.
  • City and environment — road-facing or not, gas or induction cooking, pets, and whether it ran through a pollution season.
  • For RO: feed and product TDS measured before removal. This is the one that cannot be recovered afterwards, and it is the most valuable line in the record.
  • Consent to publish photographs and the record, with no identifying detail beyond city and property type.

Nothing about the household is published beyond the city and property type, and we will confirm the consent position in writing before anything appears.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell how well a filter worked by looking at it?
Only partially, and being clear about the limit is the point. A photograph establishes that a filter loaded, roughly how evenly, and whether there was bypass around the seal. It cannot establish capture efficiency, remaining capacity, or whether the unit was delivering clean air — those need measurement, not inspection.
Is a black HEPA filter still working?
Capture efficiency actually rises as a filter loads, because the accumulated particle cake makes the medium finer. What falls is airflow, so delivered clean air drops even though each pass cleans better. A visibly black filter has done its job and is now restricting the fan — the useful measurement is airflow, not appearance.
What does an old RO membrane look like?
Externally, often unremarkable — which is exactly why membrane failure goes undiagnosed. Fouling shows as discoloration on the feed side of the element when unrolled: orange-brown for iron, whitish for scale, slimy for biofouling. None of that tells you the rejection rate, which is the only figure that matters and which requires a TDS measurement before the element is removed.
Can I send you my used filter?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful. What makes a specimen worth documenting is the record that comes with it: age in months, operating hours, city, environment and — for RO — the feed and product TDS readings taken before removal. A filter with no history is just a dirty object.
