In a purifier the water is already microbiologically treated by the time it reaches the copper chamber, so the addition is doing very little beyond taste and marketing.

Both add cost to buy and to maintain, because both are cartridges with a service life. If the budget is fixed, spend it on the membrane, the UV lamp and a TDS controller before either of these.

Are Eureka Forbes and Aquaguard the same company?

Yes. Aquaguard is Eureka Forbes' brand, not a separate company, and Aquasure is its budget sub-brand. Pureit belongs to Hindustan Unilever, which is a different company altogether.

Eureka Forbes was founded in 1982 as a joint venture between Forbes Gokak and Electrolux, and effectively created the Indian domestic water purifier market with door-to-door Aquaguard sales. It has since changed ownership — Shapoorji Pallonji, then Advent International — but the brand structure has stayed the same.

This matters practically because service is organised by the parent, not the sub-brand. An Aquaguard, an Aquasure and a Eureka Forbes-branded product all go through the same service network and the same customer care, and spares interchange within that family but not outside it.

The other big Indian names sit under different parents: Pureit is Hindustan Unilever, KENT is independent (KENT RO Systems), Livpure belongs to the SAR Group, and Aquasure is Eureka Forbes. When comparing 'brands', you are often comparing two badges of the same service organisation.

What does RO installation, shifting or fitting cost in India?

Standard wall-mounted RO installation runs about ₹350-₹700 in labour where the brand does not include it free, shifting an existing unit to a new address is typically ₹500-₹900, and an under-sink installation costs more because it involves plumbing into the supply line.

Most brands include first installation free when you buy new, and charge only for materials beyond the standard kit — extra tubing, a booster pump where inlet pressure is low, or a tap that does not come in the box. Confirm what 'free installation' covers before the technician arrives, because the extras are where the bill appears.

Shifting is the job people underestimate. Beyond mounting the unit, it usually needs a fresh inlet tap-off, a new drain route for the reject line, and a sanitisation flush — and if the new address has different feed water, the pre-filters and possibly the membrane specification should be reviewed rather than carried across unchanged.

Use the reject line when you install. Plumbing it into a bucket rather than the drain recovers two to three litres for every litre purified, which on a typical household is a few hundred litres a month for mopping and flushing.

Air purifiers

What CADR do I need for my room, and is one purifier enough for a flat?

Target a CADR of at least 5× your room's floor area in square metres, then size up one class — two classes in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurugram. And no: one purifier cannot clean a flat, because purified air does not travel through doorways.

Rated coverage on the box assumes a sealed room with the door shut and no infiltration, which is not how Indian homes are used. Sizing up one class absorbs that gap. In the NCR winter, where outdoor PM 2.5 regularly exceeds 300 µg/m³, the infiltration rate is high enough to justify two classes.

The practical consequence is about unit count, not unit size. Two mid-range purifiers running in two bedrooms will give you better air than one premium unit in the hall, because each one is working on a closed volume it can actually turn over. Buy for the rooms where people sleep first.

Check the filter grade before the CADR. 'HEPA-type', 'HEPA-like' and 'HEPA-style' specifically mean the filter does not meet the HEPA standard — require 'True HEPA' or H13. And avoid ozone generators and 'activated oxygen' cleaners entirely: ozone is a respiratory irritant that can worsen asthma.

Do air purifiers actually help with allergies, and which should allergy sufferers buy?

They help with airborne allergens — pollen, pet dander, mould spores — and barely at all with dust mites, which live in bedding and upholstery and are only briefly airborne. For a dust-mite allergy, mattress and pillow encasements do more than any purifier.

The requirement for allergy use is a genuine H13 or True HEPA filter and a sealed filter path, so that air cannot bypass the media through gaps in the housing. An unsealed body with a HEPA cartridge fitted is not equivalent, and it is a common construction at the budget end.

Placement decides how much good it does. Run it in the bedroom with the door closed, because that is where you spend eight continuous hours breathing the same volume of air, and a purifier needs several air changes to make a measurable difference.

Whether you need one at all is a local question. In Delhi NCR the case is unambiguous through winter. In Bangalore, annual PM 2.5 averages are far lower and the honest answer for most households is that a purifier is optional — worth it for a diagnosed allergy or during a specific pollen season, not as a default appliance.

What is the difference between an air conditioner and an air purifier?

An air conditioner moves heat out of a room. An air purifier removes particles from the air inside it. Neither does the other's job, and an AC's 'PM 2.5 filter' is not an air purifier — it is a thin mesh in a recirculating airflow with no sealed filter path and no CADR rating.

The giveaway is that air purifiers are rated by CADR — clean air delivery rate, in cubic metres per hour — and air conditioners are not. Without a CADR figure there is no way to state how much air a device actually cleans per hour, and manufacturers do not publish one for AC filters because the number would not be flattering.

There is a real interaction worth knowing: running an AC means keeping windows shut, which stops outdoor PM 2.5 coming in and lets a purifier in the same room work far better than it would with the windows open. The AC helps the purifier; it does not substitute for it.

If indoor air quality is the actual concern, buy the separate appliance and size it properly: CADR of at least 5× the room's floor area in square metres, sized up one class — two in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurugram — because rated coverage assumes a sealed room.
