Water Purifier Repair: Common Faults, Causes & Costs
Most water purifier faults have a small number of likely causes, and knowing which is which before you call has two benefits: you can sometimes fix it yourself in five minutes, and when you cannot, you can describe the symptom accurately enough that the technician brings the right part.
Work through the diagnostic table below before booking a visit. The number of 'faults' that turn out to be a closed inlet valve, a tripped socket or a clogged sediment filter is genuinely high.
Indicative charges
| Symptom | Likely cause | Indicative repair cost |
|---|---|---|
| No water at all | Inlet valve closed, no power, SMPS failure, or Pureit safety lock | ₹0 - ₹1,400 |
| Very slow flow | Clogged sediment/carbon filter, low input pressure, fouled membrane | ₹150 - ₹3,500 |
| Water tastes or smells bad | Exhausted carbon filter or tank biofilm | ₹250 - ₹800 |
| Output TDS high | Degraded membrane or seal bypass | ₹1,200 - ₹3,500 |
| Purifier runs continuously | Faulty float valve, leaking tank, failed auto-cut-off | ₹400 - ₹1,500 |
| Leaking from housing | Perished o-ring or over-tightened housing | ₹100 - ₹500 |
| Noisy pump | Air lock, worn pump, or dry running | ₹1,200 - ₹2,500 |
| UV indicator off | Failed lamp or ballast | ₹500 - ₹1,800 |
These are indicative market ranges across India, useful for sanity-checking a quote. Actual charges vary by city, brand and whether parts are genuine or third-party. Franchisee pricing for the same service differs meaningfully between cities — always get the quote in writing before work starts.
Check these five things before calling anyone
- Is the inlet tap fully open? Partially closed inlet valves are the single most common 'fault'.
- Is the power socket live, and is the adaptor LED on? Test the socket with something else.
- Is your building's water pressure adequate? Most RO units need roughly 5 psi minimum and will not start below it.
- When did you last change the sediment filter? A clogged pre-filter mimics almost every flow-related fault.
- If it is a Pureit and it has stopped completely, the germkill kit has almost certainly expired and the safety lock has engaged. That is intentional, not a fault.
Important
Faults worth fixing versus units worth replacing
A purifier is worth repairing when the fault is a consumable, a pump, an SMPS, a valve or a lamp — all of which are individually replaceable at modest cost on any mainstream unit.
Consider replacement instead when the unit is over eight to ten years old and needs a membrane plus pump plus tank together, when spares for the model are discontinued, or when the tank has developed a persistent smell that sanitisation does not resolve. At that point you are spending half the price of a new purifier on a machine with a limited remaining life.
