The most expensive mistake in Indian water purification is buying by brochure rather than by water. Households on soft, treated municipal supply routinely install high-recovery ROs they do not need, strip minerals they were better off keeping, and discard thousands of litres a year to solve a problem their supply does not have. Households on arsenic-belt groundwater sometimes install UV purifiers, which do nothing whatsoever about dissolved arsenic.
A water test costs a few hundred to a few thousand rupees and resolves both errors. It tells you which contaminants are actually present, at what concentration, and therefore which purification technology is genuinely required — RO, UV, UF, a softener, an iron-removal stage, or some combination.
TDS is the number everyone quotes and the one that tells you least. It measures total dissolved solids, which is useful for choosing between RO and UV+UF and for sizing a membrane, but says nothing about whether those solids include fluoride, nitrate, arsenic or lead. Two supplies at an identical 450 ppm can require entirely different treatment.

Who genuinely needs a lab test
- Anyone on borewell supply. Groundwater chemistry is local, variable and invisible.
- Anyone on tanker supply, where the source changes and so does the content.
- Households in documented arsenic belts — the Ganga-Brahmaputra plain, covering much of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
- Households in fluoride belts, notably parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
- Anyone near industrial clusters, tanneries or intensive agriculture, where heavy metals and nitrate are plausible.
- Anyone about to spend more than ₹15,000 on a purifier. The test is 5-10% of the spend and determines whether the spend is correct.
- Any household where someone has had a waterborne illness.
Tip
How to read your report
Every parameter should be printed against its IS 10500 acceptable limit and permissible limit. Acceptable is the desirable level; permissible is the maximum tolerable in the absence of an alternative source. A result between the two is not a crisis but is worth treating; a result above permissible needs action.
The parameters that most often change a purchase decision are TDS (RO or not), total hardness (softener or not), iron (pre-filtration before the membrane), nitrate and fluoride (RO required, UV useless), arsenic (RO required, and this is a health issue rather than a taste one), and coliform count (UV required).
Be sceptical of any free test offered by someone selling purifiers, particularly the TDS-meter demonstration at your door. The classic version uses an electrolysis device that makes any water turn brown and proves nothing about safety. A real test produces a report on laboratory letterhead with parameters, methods and limits.
What a test typically changes
The two most common outcomes are money saved and risk found. On low-TDS municipal supply, the test frequently shows RO is unnecessary and a UV+UF unit at half the price with no water wastage is the correct fit — a saving on purchase, on running cost and on thousands of litres a year.
On groundwater, the test more often finds something. Hardness high enough to justify a separate softener for the bathroom line, iron high enough to need pre-filtration before the membrane, or occasionally nitrate or fluoride above permissible limits — which changes the purchase from a preference into a requirement.
