Two numbers decide whether an air purifier improves your life: whether the filter is genuinely H13 HEPA, and whether its CADR is large enough for the room you put it in. Almost everything else in air purifier marketing — ion counts, stage counts, sleek app dashboards — is secondary to those two facts.

The terminology trap is worth knowing before you shop. 'HEPA-type', 'HEPA-like' and 'HEPA-style' are not weaker grades of HEPA; they are explicit signals that the filter does not meet the standard, and they appear on a lot of Indian listings. Insist on 'True HEPA' or 'H13'.

The sizing trap is the second one. Manufacturer coverage figures assume a sealed room of exactly that size with no ongoing pollution source, which describes no real Indian home. Take the claimed coverage, and buy one class up — two classes up in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida or Gurugram. And buy one purifier per bedroom rather than one large unit for the flat, because purified air does not travel usefully through doorways. For most families, two ₹13,000 units beat one ₹40,000 unit comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best air purifier in India in 2026?
The Philips 2000i Series AC2939 (around ₹24,990) is our overall pick: 333 m³/h CADR, true HEPA, a numeric PM2.5 display so you can verify it is working, and affordable widely-available filters. The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 (₹12,999) is the best value at 400 m³/h. The Coway Sleek Pro has the best filtration engineering. The Levoit Core 300S is the best bedroom option at 24 dB.
Do air purifiers actually work?
Yes — in a closed room, correctly sized, with a filter that is not exhausted. Independent testing consistently shows well-sized HEPA purifiers cutting indoor PM2.5 by 50-90%. What they cannot do is clean a room with windows open, cover a whole flat from one position, or remove gases and odours without a real activated-carbon stage. Buy one with a numeric PM2.5 display and you can verify it yourself in 40 minutes.
What CADR do I need for my room?
As a rule of thumb, CADR in m³/h should be at least 5× your room's floor area in square metres — so a 160 sq ft (15 m²) bedroom needs at least 75 m³/h. Then size up one class for normal cities and two classes for very high-pollution cities, because rated coverage assumes ideal sealed conditions. Our free room-size calculator does this for you.
How much do air purifier filters cost per year in India?
Typically ₹2,000-₹6,500 a year depending on the model. Xiaomi is cheapest with widely available filters; Dyson and Coway are the most expensive. Daikin's electrostatic HEPA is the outlier at roughly ₹1,800 a year because the filter is cleaned rather than replaced. In Delhi-NCR, expect filter life to be a third to a half of the rated figure. Always check filter cost before buying — it frequently exceeds the price difference between models.
Is an air purifier or an air conditioner better for air quality?
They do different jobs. An air conditioner cools and dehumidifies; its filter is a coarse dust screen, not a HEPA filter, so it does very little for PM2.5. An air purifier does not cool. If your concern is air quality, you need a purifier — and running both together in a closed room is the most effective combination in an Indian summer.
Are ozone or ioniser air purifiers safe?
Avoid ozone generators and anything marketed as an 'activated oxygen' cleaner — ozone is a respiratory irritant that can worsen asthma, and health authorities advise against them in occupied spaces. Bipolar ion technologies from reputable brands, such as Sharp's Plasmacluster, are generally considered safe, but treat true HEPA as the primary specification and any ion technology as supplementary.
