Refrigerator Size Calculator: How Many Litres Do You Actually Need?

What size refrigerator do you need?

Sized on usable litres and converted back to the gross figure you will see on the sticker — because gross capacity counts the freezer and the space the shelves themselves take up.

Recommendation

Look for 260 - 300 litres gross

Double door, frost free

Usable fresh-food space: about 195 - 225 L

Typical electricity use:218 units/year

Running cost:₹1,744/year

Over 12 years:₹20,928

The volume segment of the market and the right answer for most families. Insist on convertible modes — turning the freezer off recovers about 60 L of fresh-food space.

Assumptions: usable fresh-food space is about 75% of gross on a double door, and electricity is costed at ₹8 per unit against the declared BEE figure — real consumption runs somewhat higher, because the label is measured with the doors kept shut. Do not size down to save electricity: an over-packed refrigerator blocks its own airflow, cools unevenly and draws more power than its label promises.

Almost every refrigerator that disappoints its owner does so for the same reason: it was sized on the number printed on the box. Gross capacity is the total internal volume of the cabinet, and it counts the freezer compartment along with the space the shelves, drawers and door bins physically occupy. The fresh-food space you actually load is roughly 75% of that on a top-freezer double door, and less on formats with more compartments. A family that decides 240 litres sounds ample is really buying about 180 litres of usable space, and discovers the difference within a month.

The second mistake is sizing down to save on the electricity bill. It is a reasonable instinct and it backfires: an over-packed refrigerator blocks its own internal airflow, which makes the compressor run longer to hold temperature and produces uneven cooling that spoils food on the shelves furthest from the vents. Meanwhile the actual gap between adjacent sizes is small — a 272 L double door declares 219 units a year against 205 for a 242 L, a difference of about ₹110. Buy the size that will not be full, then choose the most efficient model available at that size.

The third is shortlisting before measuring. Refrigerators above about 400 litres are 833 to 913 mm wide and 685 to 745 mm deep, and they need roughly 1,000 mm of gap for airflow plus about 1,300 mm of clear floor for the doors to open far enough that the internal drawers pull out. Measure the delivery route as carefully as the kitchen — a 745 mm cabinet will not pass a standard 750 mm door frame with its doors still attached, and discovering that on delivery day is an expensive afternoon.

Once the calculator has given you a band, use the convertible feature as your safety margin rather than buying a size up. Most current double doors let you switch the freezer off entirely and run the whole cabinet as fresh-food space, which recovers roughly 60 litres on a 242 L unit. Because Indian households generally freeze far less than the standard freezer-to-fridge ratio assumes, that is the cheapest capacity you will ever buy — and it is reversible when you need the freezer back.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres of refrigerator do I need?
As a working rule for Indian households: 185-200 litres for one or two people, 240-290 for a family of four, 330-350 for five or six, and 500 or more for seven or eight. Adjust upward if you shop weekly rather than twice a week, and downward if you eat out most days. But size on usable litres rather than the gross figure — a 260 L double door holds about 195 L of actual fresh-food space.
Why is usable capacity less than the litres on the sticker?
Because gross capacity is the total internal volume, which counts the freezer compartment and the space the shelves, drawers and door bins themselves occupy. On a top-freezer double door, usable fresh-food space is roughly 75% of the gross figure; on a triple door it is nearer 72%, and on a side-by-side about 73%. Sizing on the sticker number is the single most common reason a new refrigerator feels full within a month.
Should I buy a smaller refrigerator to save electricity?
No, not if it means under-sizing. An over-packed refrigerator blocks its own airflow, cools unevenly and draws more power than its label promises, so the saving does not materialise and food spoils faster. The gap between adjacent sizes is small anyway — a 272 L double door costs about ₹110 a year more to run than a 242 L. Buy the size you need, then pick the most efficient model at that size.
How much space does a refrigerator need around it?
Allow at least 50 mm of total side clearance and 75 mm at the back for airflow — a refrigerator rejects heat through the coils and a boxed-in cabinet runs hotter, louder and more expensively. Doors also need to open close to 120 degrees for internal drawers to pull out, so plan roughly 1,300 mm of clear floor in front on large formats. Check the delivery route too: a 740 mm deep cabinet will not pass a standard 750 mm door frame with its doors attached.
What size refrigerator fits a narrow kitchen?
Under 600 mm of gap you are limited to single door and the narrower double doors — LG's 595 mm cabinets are the ones to look for, and Whirlpool's 540 mm single door is the narrowest full-size unit here. Between 600 and 800 mm most double doors and triple doors fit. Side-by-side and French door models are 833-913 mm wide and need about 1,000 mm of gap, so they are out unless the kitchen was planned for them.
