Air Purifier Replacement Filters: Prices, Life and What to Buy
The purchase price of an air purifier is the smaller half of what it costs you. Over five years, filters typically total more than the machine — and the difference between a cheap-to-run model and an expensive one can easily exceed ₹20,000 across that period.
This is also the most common reason purifiers stop being used. A unit whose filters cost ₹6,000 a year, or which are simply not stocked in your city, quietly gets switched off and then put away. The purifier that keeps working is the one you keep re-filtering.

Important
Genuine or third-party?
- REASONABLE on high-volume models such as Xiaomi, where third-party filters are widely reviewed and the fit is well documented.
- RISKY where sealing matters. A filter that does not seat properly lets air bypass the media, which quietly destroys the machine's effective rating while looking perfectly fine.
- CHECK the media grade. Many cheap replacements are 'HEPA-type' — you may be downgrading from H13 without realising it.
- NOTE the warranty. Non-genuine consumables void warranty on some models; check before your first change if the unit is still covered.
- AVOID entirely on formaldehyde-destroying or sealed-system models, where the filter is part of a certified assembly.
How to make filters last longer
- Clean the pre-filter every 2–4 weeks — fortnightly in a home with pets. This is the highest-value habit available.
- Clean the PM2.5 sensor every couple of months with a dry cotton bud. A dusty sensor reads high, which makes auto mode run the fan harder than necessary and burns through filter life.
- Run on auto rather than permanently on high. Turbo is for the first hour after closing a room, not all day.
- Keep windows shut when outdoor AQI is above about 150 — ventilation at that point is loading your filter for no benefit.
- Use the kitchen exhaust every time you cook. Frying alone can push indoor PM2.5 above 300 µg/m³.
