How Much Phone Storage Do You Need?
How much is 1TB?
1TB (one terabyte) is 1,024GB. In everyday terms that is about 2,50,000 photos from a 50MP camera, around 150 hours of 4K video, or 250,000 songs. It is the largest storage offered on any phone sold in India.
Not all of it is yours: the operating system and preinstalled apps take 15–40GB before you save a single file, and that share grows with each major software update.
How much do you actually need?
- 128GB — light use: messaging, social media, streaming. Tight within two years if you shoot a lot of video.
- 256GB — the sensible default for most buyers in 2026, and enough for four years of normal use.
- 512GB — heavy 4K video, large offline game libraries, or anyone who keeps a phone five years or more.
- 1TB — professional video, or buyers who never want to think about storage. Currently flagship-only.
512GB phones under ₹50,000
Among phones launched in India, only four offer a 512GB variant at or below ₹50,000 at official launch price. Every one of them pairs it with 12GB or 16GB of RAM:

Five phones launched in India with a 1TB variant, and all five are Samsung: the Galaxy S25 Ultra (₹1,65,999), Galaxy S26 Ultra (₹1,89,999), Galaxy Z Fold7 (₹2,16,999), Galaxy Z Fold8 (₹2,39,999) and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra (₹2,59,999).
A listing that claims 1TB of storage for ₹20,000–₹30,000 is almost always either a fake-capacity device or counting a memory card. Treat it with suspicion.
Memory cards and cloud storage
Most mid-range and flagship phones in 2026 have no microSD slot, so buy the storage you need up front. Cloud storage is a useful backup but relies on data and a monthly subscription; it does not replace on-device space for 4K video or offline media.
