Water Coolers: Sizing Chilled Capacity for Indian Conditions

In an Indian workplace, chilled drinking water is not a luxury — it materially affects whether people drink enough during a shift. The common failure is not that a cooler is absent but that it cannot keep up: a queue forms at lunch, the water comes out lukewarm, and consumption drops.

That happens because buyers size on storage capacity — the tank volume — and overlook chilling capacity, which is the rate at which the machine can actually bring water down to temperature. A 40-litre tank that chills at 20 litres per hour will run out of cold water long before it runs out of water.

Storage vs chilling capacity

Storage capacity tells you how much cold water is banked and ready. Chilling capacity — litres per hour — tells you how fast the machine replenishes that bank. Peak demand tests the second number, not the first.

A canteen serving 200 people over a 45-minute lunch break may need 150 litres in that window. A cooler with an 80-litre tank and 40 LPH chilling delivers roughly 80 litres cold, then progressively warmer water. The fix is either more chilling capacity, more storage, or both — and storage is usually cheaper.

Ambient conditions change everything

  • A cooler's rated chilling capacity is measured at a stated ambient temperature. On a 45°C un-airconditioned shop floor, real output is materially lower.
  • For factory floors, foundries and warehouses, size up — the rating was almost certainly not measured in your conditions.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the condenser. A cooler pushed against a wall in a hot corner will struggle and its compressor will work harder.
  • Direct sunlight on the cabinet is a real load. Site it in shade.
  • In dusty environments, clean the condenser coil regularly — a dust-blanketed coil is the most common cause of 'the cooler stopped cooling properly'.

Tip

When specifying for a factory, state the actual ambient temperature at the installation point in your enquiry. Suppliers size from rated conditions unless told otherwise, and that is how a cooler that looked adequate on paper disappoints in May.

Integrated or separate RO?

  • BELOW ~40 PEOPLE — an integrated cooler-cum-purifier is simpler, cheaper and adequate. One unit, one service call.
  • ABOVE ~40 PEOPLE — a separate commercial RO plant feeding one or more coolers is usually better: you can size purification and chilling independently, service them separately, and add dispensing points later without replacing the treatment.
  • MULTI-LOCATION FACTORY — one central RO plant feeding several coolers across the floor is almost always the right architecture, and far easier to maintain than independent units.
  • HIGH-TDS FEED — keep the RO separate and properly pre-treated. An integrated unit's compact pre-treatment is rarely adequate for difficult water.
  • In all cases, ensure the cooler accepts a pressurised feed with level-based auto fill via a high-pressure sensor, so it integrates cleanly with the plant.

Construction and hygiene

  • SS-304 is the commercial norm for tank and body. It tolerates washdown, resists corrosion, and is far more hygienic than plastic over a long service life.
  • Look for a drain and drip tray plumbed to waste, not a tray someone has to empty — in practice nobody empties it.
  • Insist on an accessible tank for sanitisation. Sealed tanks that cannot be cleaned become a hygiene problem in a few years.
  • Multiple taps reduce queueing at peak and spread wear.
  • Foot-operated or sensor taps are worth considering in high-traffic settings for hygiene reasons.
  • Sanitise the tank quarterly and log it. In an institutional setting this is also your diligence record.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size a water cooler for my office?
Estimate 3–4 litres per person per day, then size chilling capacity for peak draw rather than the daily average — lunch hour and shift changes create the real load. Ambient conditions matter substantially: an un-airconditioned factory floor in summer needs considerably more chilling capacity than an office at the same headcount.
What is the difference between storage and chilling capacity?
Storage is the tank volume — how much cold water is banked and ready. Chilling capacity, in litres per hour, is how fast the machine replenishes it. Should the RO be built into the cooler or separate?

Above that, a separate commercial RO plant feeding one or more coolers is better — you can size purification and chilling independently, service them separately, and add dispensing points without replacing the treatment. On difficult high-TDS feed water, keep them separate so pre-treatment can be sized properly.
