Membranes are the largest recurring consumable in a commercial RO plant, and the most commonly replaced when they did not need to be. Fouled membranes can often be restored by cleaning; oxidised or physically damaged membranes cannot. Knowing which you have is worth real money.

The test is straightforward. If normalised flow has dropped and differential pressure has risen, you have fouling and CIP is the answer. If salt rejection has fallen while flow and pressure are roughly unchanged, the membrane's selective layer has been damaged — usually by residual chlorine getting past an exhausted carbon filter — and cleaning will not bring it back.

For multi-site operators, bulk cartridge and membrane supply on a scheduled basis is worth setting up. It reduces unit cost, and more usefully it removes the failure mode where a site runs three months past a cartridge change because nobody raised a purchase requisition.

Figures are indicative planning ranges for budgetary approval, not quotations. Actual cost and achievable output depend on your feed-water analysis, materials of construction, automation level, instrumentation, storage and site conditions.

Clean or replace? The diagnostic

  • Normalised flow down + differential pressure up → FOULING. Clean it (CIP). Replacement is premature and wasteful.
  • Salt rejection down, flow and pressure roughly unchanged → OXIDATION or DAMAGE. Replace; cleaning will not restore selectivity.
  • Sudden rejection loss with normal pressures → BYPASS. Check o-rings, interconnectors and brine seals before condemning membranes.
  • Progressive decline over years with good pre-treatment → normal end of life. Replace on a planned basis.

Tip

Normalise your data before drawing conclusions. Raw flow and rejection figures move with feed temperature and pressure, so an apparent decline can simply be a colder feed. Normalisation is what turns your log into a diagnosis.

Bulk supply for multi-site operators

  • Scheduled cartridge supply against a site-by-site replacement calendar, so changes happen on time rather than on complaint.
  • Standardised specification across sites, which cuts unit cost and simplifies stockholding.
  • Consolidated invoicing and a single point of contact for facilities teams.
  • Membrane stocking arrangements for production-critical sites, so failures do not wait on logistics.

Why specify with us

Low total cost of ownership

High-rejection membranes, correctly sized pre-treatment and efficient pumps reduce power draw, consumable spend and reject volume. We quote five-year operating cost alongside capex, because that is the number that actually matters.

Heavy-duty SS-304 / SS-316 build

Corrosion-resistant stainless chassis and wetted parts engineered for continuous 24/7 duty, with SS-316 specified where chlorides or process chemistry demand it.

Rapid on-site servicing & AMC

Pan-India installation and service, with written response times and escalation in the AMC rather than verbal assurances — because plant downtime, not the repair, is your real cost.

Custom TDS tuning

Systems engineered against your actual water analysis — brackish groundwater, municipal supply or heavy borewell input, including high-TDS configurations for 3,000+ ppm feed.

Treatment architecture

  1. 1

    Pre-treatment module

Multigrade sand and activated carbon filtration strips suspended solids, turbidity and chlorine that would otherwise oxidise the RO membrane.

  2. 2

    Softening / antiscalant dosing

Protects membranes from calcium and magnesium scaling. On hard feed water this stage is not optional — it determines membrane life.

  3. 3

    High-pressure RO module

Heavy-duty booster pumps drive feed water through industrial spiral-wound membranes at 12-18 bar in an array sized for your recovery target.

  4. 4

    Post-treatment disinfection

UV disinfection and ozonation, with mineral dosing where potable taste and consistency matter.

  5. 5

    Microprocessor / PLC controls

Auto start-stop on tank level, dry-run protection, high and low pressure cut-offs, and timed membrane flushing — with data logging on industrial plants.

Frequently asked questions

How much does commercial RO membrane replacement cost?
Indicatively ₹1,500-₹4,000 for a domestic-size membrane in a small commercial unit, ₹6,000-₹14,000 per 4040 industrial membrane, and ₹18,000-₹40,000 per 8040 membrane — with multiple membranes per pressure vessel on industrial plants. Cost per plant therefore depends on the array configuration, not just the capacity.
When should an RO membrane be replaced rather than cleaned?
Replace when salt rejection has fallen while flow and differential pressure are roughly unchanged, because that indicates oxidation or physical damage to the selective layer, which cleaning cannot reverse. Clean rather than replace when flow has fallen and differential pressure has risen, which indicates fouling. Always rule out seal bypass first — it presents like membrane failure and is far cheaper to fix.
Can I buy commercial water filter cartridges in bulk?
Yes. Bulk and scheduled cartridge supply is available for multi-site operators, which lowers unit cost and — more valuably — replaces reactive purchasing with a replacement calendar. The most common cause of premature membrane failure in multi-site estates is cartridges running months past due because nobody raised a requisition.
