Assumptions: units are watts × hours × days ÷ 1,000, costed at your tariff. This counts electricity only — it ignores the regulator losses an old induction fan also suffers, so the real saving is usually a little larger than shown.

Ceiling fan marketing talks about RPM, blade design, copper motors and “power saving technology”. None of it changes your bill. Electricity is billed in units, a unit is a kilowatt drawn for an hour, and the only input is the watts the fan draws. A fan that claims to save power and draws 75 W does not save power. That is why every fan on this site carries its published input power, and why nothing appears on our energy saving page unless the manufacturer publishes a figure of 35 W or less. Of the 384 ceiling fans verified here, only 179 publish wattage at all — if a brand will not tell you, read the BEE label on the box before you pay.

Payback depends on hours, so the fans worth replacing first are the ones that run longest: the bedroom fan that runs all night and the hall fan that runs all evening. A guest-room fan used three weeks a year will never pay back, whatever the brochure says. In an office or a shop the arithmetic is far stronger, because the fans run eight to ten hours a day for 250 days — twenty 75 W fans cost about ₹30,000 a year at ₹8 a unit, where twenty 28 W fans cost about ₹11,200, so the upgrade clears its cost inside the second year.

One thing this calculator deliberately leaves out: it counts the fan only. An old induction fan on a conventional resistive regulator also wastes power in the regulator itself when it runs at reduced speed, and that loss never reaches the blades. Because it varies with the regulator, we do not estimate it — which means the real saving from moving to a BLDC fan is usually a little larger than the figure above, never smaller.

How long does a BLDC fan take to pay for itself?
Usually about two summers. Replacing a 75 W fan with a 28 W one saves roughly ₹950 a year at ₹8 a unit and twelve hours a day, against a price premium of ₹1,500-2,000. If you run the fan fewer hours, or your tariff is lower, it takes longer — which is what the calculator above is for.
Is it worth replacing a working ceiling fan with a BLDC one?
If the old fan draws 70-80 W and runs most of the day, yes — it pays back in about two years and then saves money every year after. If it is a modern 50 W fan, or the room is used occasionally, the payback stretches past five years and it is better to wait until the fan fails.
Does running a fan on low speed save electricity?
On a BLDC fan, yes and substantially — the electronic controller actually reduces the power drawn. On an induction fan with a conventional regulator, much less than people assume: an old resistive regulator wastes the difference as heat in the regulator itself, so a fan on speed one can draw nearly as much from the meter as on speed five.
How many units does a ceiling fan consume per month?
Multiply watts by hours per day, then by 30, and divide by 1,000. A 75 W fan at twelve hours a day is about 27 units a month; a 28 W BLDC fan is about 10. At ₹8 a unit that is roughly ₹216 against ₹81 per fan per month.
Do ceiling fans use more electricity than air conditioners?
No, by a wide margin. A 1.5 ton inverter AC draws roughly 900-1,500 W in normal operation against 28-75 W for a ceiling fan — twenty to forty times as much. Running fans alongside an AC lets you set the AC two degrees higher, which usually saves more than the fans cost.
