RO Membranes: Replacement Prices, Life and Clean vs Replace

The RO membrane is the component that actually protects you, and the largest recurring consumable in any RO system. It is also the part most frequently replaced when it did not need to be, because 'the membrane needs changing' is the easiest thing for a technician to say and the hardest thing for a household to challenge.

The good news is that the diagnosis is genuinely simple if you have two numbers: input TDS and output TDS. Everything below follows from those.

Prices and life

GPD means gallons per day and describes rated throughput, not quality. A 100 GPD membrane is not 'better' than a 75 GPD one; it produces more water per hour, which matters for tank refill speed rather than purification. Fitting a higher-GPD membrane than the unit's pump and flow restrictor were designed for gives poorer rejection, not better performance.

Clean or replace? The diagnostic that saves money

  • Normalised flow DOWN and differential pressure UP → FOULING. Clean it (CIP on industrial plants). Replacement is premature and wasteful.
  • Salt rejection DOWN with flow and pressure roughly unchanged → OXIDATION or PHYSICAL DAMAGE. Replace; cleaning cannot restore selectivity.
  • Sudden rejection loss with normal pressures → BYPASS. Check o-rings, interconnectors and brine seals before condemning the membrane.
  • Progressive decline over years with good pre-treatment → normal end of life. Replace on a planned basis.
  • Flow down but rejection still good → check the pre-filters and inlet pressure first. Often nothing is wrong with the membrane at all.

Tip

Before agreeing to any membrane replacement, ask the technician to measure and write down input TDS and output TDS. If output is still low relative to input, the membrane is working — whatever its age, and whatever the indicator light says.

What shortens membrane life

  • Chlorine — chemically attacks the thin-film polyamide layer. This is the single biggest cause of premature failure, and it happens whenever the carbon pre-filter is exhausted.
  • Sediment — abrades the membrane surface. Prevented by the sediment pre-filter.
  • Iron — fouls rapidly and is common in Bengal, Assam, Bihar and parts of the North East. Needs removal upstream.
  • Hardness scaling — above roughly 2,000 ppm, antiscalant dosing becomes appropriate.
  • Biological fouling — biofilm growth, worse in warm conditions and where a unit sits unused for long periods.
  • Running dry or at inadequate inlet pressure — stresses pump and membrane together.
  • High input TDS itself — the membrane simply works harder, which is why 1,500 ppm supply gives shorter life than 400 ppm.

Genuine or third-party?

For sediment and carbon cartridges, reputable third-party parts are usually a sensible saving. For the membrane, we would not economise. A cheap membrane of unverifiable origin may have lower rejection than claimed, and you have no practical way to verify that beyond measuring output TDS — which most households do not do.

Since the membrane is precisely the component protecting you from dissolved contaminants, this is a poor place to save ₹800. Note too that non-genuine parts void warranty on some models.

  • After any membrane change, measure output TDS immediately and record it. That single reading proves the new membrane performs, and gives you a baseline for detecting future decline.
  • Keep the old membrane until you have verified the new one is working properly.
  • Ask for the membrane's make and model on the service slip, not just 'RO membrane replaced'.

Always rule out seal bypass first — it looks identical to membrane failure and is far cheaper to fix.
Can I fit a higher GPD membrane to get better water?
No — GPD describes throughput, not purification quality. Fitting a membrane rated higher than your unit's pump and flow restrictor were designed for actually gives poorer rejection, because the recovery ratio shifts unfavourably. Match the membrane to the specification the manufacturer designed the system around.
How long does an RO membrane last?
Typically 12–24 months in domestic use, dropping to 10–12 months above roughly 1,200 ppm input TDS. Life is determined mainly by whether the carbon pre-filter is changed on schedule — chlorine reaching the membrane destroys it — and by iron, hardness and sediment load in the feed water.
