UV Lamps for Water Purifiers: Life, Prices and Silent Failure

The UV lamp is the component most likely to fail silently in a water purifier. A membrane that degrades shows up as rising output TDS if anyone is measuring. A clogged sediment filter shows up as reduced flow. A UV lamp that has lost most of its germicidal output looks exactly like a working lamp: it still glows, the indicator light is still on, and the water still looks and tastes fine.

That is the central thing to understand about UV maintenance. The visible glow is not the germicidal output — UV-C at 254 nm is invisible, and the faint blue light you see is a by-product. Output declines steadily across the lamp's life while the visible glow persists, so a lamp two years into a one-year rated life may be delivering a fraction of the dose it should.

Why output declines before failure

UV-C germicidal lamps are low-pressure mercury lamps. Over their life, the phosphor-free quartz envelope solarises — it gradually becomes less transparent to its own UV-C output — and electrode material deposits on the inner surface. Both reduce transmitted intensity while leaving the visible discharge largely unchanged.

The practical result is a lamp that may retain only 60–70% of its initial UV-C output at the end of its rated life, and considerably less beyond it. Since disinfection depends on dose — intensity multiplied by contact time — a lamp at half output is delivering half the dose at the same flow rate.

Important

A glowing lamp is not proof of disinfection. If your purifier has run more than about a year on the same UV lamp, replace it — regardless of whether it still lights and regardless of whether the water tastes fine.

The quartz sleeve — as important as the lamp

  • The lamp sits inside a quartz sleeve that keeps it dry while letting UV through. Anything on that sleeve blocks UV.
  • Hard water leaves scale on the sleeve; iron leaves a stubborn film. Both cut transmitted intensity substantially.
  • Clean the sleeve at every service with a soft cloth and, for scale, a mild acid descaler. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Handle only by the ends. Fingerprints leave oils that absorb UV and bake on in use.
  • Replace the sleeve if it is etched, clouded or cracked. A cracked sleeve floods the lamp and fails immediately.
  • On hard water, an automatic wiper (on commercial units) or a softener upstream substantially reduces this problem.

Safety when handling UV lamps

  • Never look at an energised UV-C lamp. It causes photokeratitis — painful corneal inflammation — and the symptoms appear hours later.
  • Isolate power before opening a UV chamber. Do not defeat interlocks.
  • UV-C also burns skin on brief exposure. Keep hands out of the beam path.
  • These lamps contain a small amount of mercury. Do not break them, and dispose of them as e-waste rather than in household rubbish.
  • Let the lamp cool before handling. It runs hot.

How often should a UV lamp be replaced in a water purifier?
Every 9,000–12,000 hours, which is roughly annually in continuous domestic use. Replace on hours rather than on failure: UV-C output falls substantially while the lamp still visibly glows, so a lamp past its rated life may be delivering a fraction of the required dose while appearing to work perfectly.
How do I know if my UV lamp is still working?
You largely cannot tell by looking, which is the problem — the visible blue glow is a by-product, not the germicidal UV-C output. Some purifiers have a UV intensity sensor, which is the only reliable indicator. Without one, track running hours and replace annually. If you need certainty, a laboratory coliform test on the output is the definitive check.
What does a UV lamp cost for a water purifier in India?
₹500–₹1,500 for a domestic purifier lamp, ₹1,200–₹4,000 for commercial inline lamps, and ₹3,000–₹6,000 or more for industrial amalgam lamps. Budget separately for the quartz sleeve (₹400–₹2,000) if it is etched or clouded, and for a ballast (₹600–₹2,500) if that has failed.
Can I clean a UV lamp instead of replacing it?
Cleaning the quartz sleeve around the lamp is essential maintenance and does restore lost transmission from scale or film. But cleaning cannot restore the lamp's own declining UV-C output, which is a property of the lamp's ageing. Clean the sleeve at every service; replace the lamp on hours.
