True HEPA vs 'HEPA-Type': How to Tell a Real Filter From a Marketing Word

'HEPA-type' / 'HEPA-like'

An unregulated marketing phrase describing a filter that resembles HEPA but meets no standard. Efficiency is typically 85-95%.

True HEPA (H13/H14) compared with 'HEPA-type' / 'HEPA-like'

Choose True HEPA (H13/H14) if…

  • PM2.5, smog or allergen exposure is why you are buying — which is nearly everyone in India.
  • Someone in the household has asthma, allergic rhinitis or a respiratory condition.
  • You want a purchase whose performance claim can actually be checked against a standard.

Choose 'HEPA-type' / 'HEPA-like' if…

  • Honestly, almost never for a primary purifier. A 'HEPA-type' filter is defensible only as a coarse pre-filter stage in front of a real HEPA, or in a car purifier where the alternative is nothing at all.

Why 0.3 microns, and why 'smaller particles' is not a gotcha

HEPA ratings are quoted at 0.3 microns because that is the Most Penetrating Particle Size — the hardest size for a fibre filter to catch. Larger particles are intercepted and impacted; smaller ones move erratically by Brownian diffusion and collide with fibres more readily.

This means a HEPA filter is more efficient above and below 0.3 microns, not less. The occasional claim that 'HEPA cannot catch particles smaller than 0.3 microns' has the physics backwards. A true H13 filter's efficiency at 0.1 microns is higher than its rated figure, not lower.

How to check, in the shop and at home

  • Find the grade printed on the filter frame — H11, H12, H13 or H14. If the only place the word HEPA appears is the carton, that is your answer.
  • Read the exact wording. 'True HEPA H13' is a claim. 'HEPA-type filtration technology' is a sentence constructed to avoid making one.
  • Check the replacement filter listing as well as the machine. A handful of units ship with a real H13 and sell replacements that are quietly not.
  • Ask whether the machine is sealed. Dyson certifies whole-machine sealing to H13; most brands certify the filter only. On a poorly sealed body, some of the air goes around the filter.
  • Be suspicious of very cheap replacement filters from third-party sellers. An unbranded 'H13-compatible' filter at a third of the price is usually not H13.

Important

There is no legal definition of 'HEPA-type' anywhere. It exists precisely so that a filter which would fail an H13 test can carry the letters H, E, P and A on the box.

Why H14 is usually the wrong upgrade

Higher grades cost airflow. A denser mat has higher pressure drop, so the same fan pushes less air through it, and clean-air delivery rate — the number that actually determines how fast your room gets clean — falls.

For a bedroom, an H13 filter moving 300 m³/h of air will out-clean an H14 filter moving 180 m³/h, comfortably. Buy the grade that is standard for the category and spend the difference on CADR, carbon mass or a second unit for another room.

Frequently asked questions

Is HEPA-type as good as True HEPA?
No. 'HEPA-type' meets no standard and typically captures 85-95% of particles at the most-penetrating size, against 99.95% for H13. That gap means 10 to 100 times more particles passing through, which matters a great deal when the particles are PM2.5.
What does H13 mean on an air purifier?
H13 is a grade in the EN 1822 classification, requiring at least 99.95% efficiency at the most-penetrating particle size. It is the standard worth insisting on for a domestic purifier in India, and it should be printed on the filter itself.
Is H14 better than H13 for home use?
On paper yes, in practice usually not. H14 media is denser, so airflow and clean-air delivery drop for the same fan. A H13 unit with higher CADR will clean a room faster than an H14 unit with lower CADR.
Can HEPA filters be washed and reused?
No. Washing collapses the fibre structure and destroys the electrostatic charge that some media rely on, and a damp filter grows mould. Vacuum the pre-filter if the manual permits it, and replace the HEPA on schedule.
