Choose Standard RO if…

You want purification and nothing else, at the lowest sensible cost.
Your RO already has a TDS controller keeping output around 60-100 ppm — which achieves most of the taste benefit for free.
You would rather put ₹6,000 into a better membrane, a better brand or an AMC.

Choose Alkaline RO if…

You dislike the flat taste of RO water and have already tried adjusting the TDS controller.
Your input TDS is high (700 ppm+), so the RO output really is stripped and needs meaningful re-mineralisation.
You are buying it as a taste and mouthfeel upgrade with clear eyes about what it is.

What alkaline actually means here

Reverse osmosis removes dissolved bicarbonates along with everything else, and bicarbonate is what buffers water's pH. Strip it and the water becomes mildly acidic — typically pH 6.0-6.8 — as it equilibrates with carbon dioxide from the air. That is not dangerous; fruit juice is pH 3.5. But it does taste flat, and it is the reason RO water is often described as tasting 'empty'.

An alkaline cartridge passes that water over a mineral bed — usually calcium and magnesium compounds, sometimes with tourmaline or maifan stone — which dissolves a small quantity back in and lifts the pH. That is the whole mechanism. There is nothing exotic in it, and it is the same thing a good mineraliser cartridge does, marketed harder.

Important

If a salesperson tells you alkaline water prevents cancer, diabetes or acidity-related disease, that is a misleading claim under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. It is also a reliable signal that you are being sold on story rather than specification.

The cheaper route to the same result

Before paying for an alkaline model, check whether your existing purifier has a TDS controller and whether it is set sensibly. Many are shipped set aggressively low, producing 25-40 ppm output that tastes flat. Opening the controller to land at 70-100 ppm blends some untreated water back in, restores taste and costs nothing.

If your input TDS is under 300 ppm, this alone will usually solve the problem. If your input is 900 ppm, blending back is less attractive — you would be blending back the very hardness you paid to remove — and a proper alkaline or mineraliser cartridge is the better route.

Is alkaline water better than RO water?

It is RO water with minerals added back and pH raised. That gives a rounder taste and a less acidic drink, both of which are real. Claims that it changes your body's pH or treats disease are not supported by good evidence — your stomach acid neutralises it within minutes.

Is RO water acidic and is that a problem?

RO output typically measures pH 6.0-7.0, which is mildly acidic because the buffering bicarbonates have been removed. It is not a health problem — plenty of ordinary foods are far more acidic. It does affect taste, and it is why mineraliser and alkaline cartridges exist.

Is an alkaline water purifier worth the extra money?

As a taste and re-mineralisation upgrade on high-TDS input, it is defensible. As a health purchase, no — the evidence is not there. If your input TDS is already low, adjusting the TDS controller on a standard RO achieves most of the benefit for nothing.
