Best RO Water Purifiers in India (2026)

10 products assessedUpdated August 2026Independent · affiliate-funded

Reverse osmosis is the only domestic technology that lowers TDS. Everything else in a purifier — UV, UF, carbon, copper, alkaline — solves a different problem, and none of them touch dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, nitrate or heavy metals. So if your supply is borewell-fed, tanker-fed, blended, or measures above roughly 300 ppm, an RO is not a preference. It is the only category that will work.

The corollary matters just as much, and almost nobody selling RO will say it: if your water is treated municipal supply below 200 ppm, buying RO is a mistake. You will pay more, waste two to three litres for every litre you drink, strip out calcium and magnesium, and end up with flat-tasting water — to solve a problem you do not have. Test with a ₹300 TDS meter before you spend ₹16,000.

For everyone who genuinely does need RO, four specifications decide the purchase and the rest is marketing. Input TDS rating must exceed your worst seasonal reading with headroom. A TDS controller must be present, or output arrives demineralised. Water recovery decides your monthly bill in a tanker-fed city. And the service network decides whether the unit is still working in year three — which, in this category, is the failure mode that actually happens.

The ranking below weights all four, plus five-year running cost rather than sticker price. Stage counts are deliberately ignored: brands inflate them by counting sediment pads, and a well-built 6-stage unit beats a badly built 12-stage one every time.

How we chose these

Membrane input rating

2,000 ppm covers the large majority of Indian supply including most borewells. Buy 3,000 ppm only if you have measured above 1,500 ppm — in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Churu, Pali or coastal Tamil Nadu, for instance. Rating below your worst summer reading is how membranes die in five months.

TDS controller

Non-negotiable. It blends a measured amount of UF-filtered water back into the RO output so you land at a pleasant 60-120 ppm instead of a flat 25 ppm, and it lets you re-tune when your supply switches between municipal and tanker in summer.

Water recovery

A legacy RO rejects three litres per litre purified — roughly 16,000 litres a year for a family of four. High-recovery designs such as KENT's Save Water and AO Smith's Advanced Recovery halve that. In a city where you buy tankers, this is a line item, not a talking point.

Five-year running cost

Membrane, UV lamp, pre-filters and labour typically total ₹3,000-₹4,500 a year — which means consumables often cost more than the purifier over its life. We rank on that total, not on the launch price.

Service reachability

Weighted heavily, and decisively so outside metros. A brilliant purifier with no technician in your pin code is a worse purchase than an average one that gets serviced in 48 hours. Phone customer care with your pin code before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best RO water purifier in India?
For most Indian homes, the KENT Grand Plus (around ₹16,499) — a 2,000 ppm input rating, TDS controller, 9-litre tank, roughly 50% water recovery and the strongest service network in the country. The Aquaguard Delight NXT (around ₹17,990) is the pick if kitchen space is tight, and the AO Smith Z9 Green RO (around ₹33,990) is the one to buy if your supply is brackish at 2,000 ppm or more, or if you want hot water on tap.
Is RO water good for health?
For water above roughly 300 ppm TDS, yes — RO removes dissolved salts, heavy metals, fluoride and nitrate that no other domestic technology touches, and that benefit far outweighs the mineral loss. On low-TDS supply the calculation reverses: RO strips calcium and magnesium you want to keep and delivers flat water people drink less of. Use a TDS controller to keep output around 60-120 ppm and the objection largely disappears.
How much does an RO water purifier cost in India?
A genuine RO starts around ₹9,000 (Livpure Glo Pro++, Aquasure Delight). The mainstream band is ₹13,000-₹18,000, where you get RO+UV+UF with a TDS controller and a usable tank — KENT Grand Plus, Aquaguard Delight NXT, Pureit Copper+. Above ₹25,000 you are buying hot water, a stainless-steel tank, a 3,000 ppm rating or under-sink installation. Budget a further ₹3,000-₹4,500 a year for consumables.
How long does an RO membrane last?
Rated life is typically 18-24 months, but it is a function of your input TDS and your pre-filter discipline. On 400 ppm municipal supply you may reach 24 months; on 1,200 ppm borewell water plan on 10-12; above 2,000 ppm, less again. Sediment and carbon pre-filters exist to protect the membrane — changing them every six months is what makes the expensive part last.
Which RO is best for 1500 TDS water?
Any membrane rated to 2,000 ppm handles 1,500 ppm, but with limited headroom — and borewell TDS climbs in summer. The safer specification is the AO Smith Z9 Green RO at 3,000 ppm. Whichever you choose, insist on a TDS controller, change pre-filters every six months, and budget for membrane replacement every 10-12 months rather than every 18.
Does an RO purifier work without electricity?
No. Reverse osmosis needs a booster pump to push water through the membrane against osmotic pressure, so it needs mains power and reasonable line pressure. If your power supply is unreliable, either pair the purifier with an inverter point or, for low-TDS supply only, use a gravity UF purifier that needs neither.
