AO Smith Z9 Green RO
Hot water on tap, and the best water recovery in the category
- Three-temperature hot water on tap removes the need for a separate kettle
- Advanced Recovery Technology genuinely doubles water recovery versus conventional RO
By technology
Reverse osmosis is the only domestic technology that lowers TDS. Everything else in a purifier — UV, UF, carbon, copper, alkaline — solves a different problem, and none of them touch dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, nitrate or heavy metals. So if your supply is borewell-fed, tanker-fed, blended, or measures above roughly 300 ppm, an RO is not a preference. It is the only category that will work.
The corollary matters just as much, and almost nobody selling RO will say it: if your water is treated municipal supply below 200 ppm, buying RO is a mistake. You will pay more, waste two to three litres for every litre you drink, strip out calcium and magnesium, and end up with flat-tasting water — to solve a problem you do not have. Test with a ₹300 TDS meter before you spend ₹16,000.
For everyone who genuinely does need RO, four specifications decide the purchase and the rest is marketing. Input TDS rating must exceed your worst seasonal reading with headroom. A TDS controller must be present, or output arrives demineralised. Water recovery decides your monthly bill in a tanker-fed city. And the service network decides whether the unit is still working in year three — which, in this category, is the failure mode that actually happens.
The ranking below weights all four, plus five-year running cost rather than sticker price. Stage counts are deliberately ignored: brands inflate them by counting sediment pads, and a well-built 6-stage unit beats a badly built 12-stage one every time.

2,000 ppm covers the large majority of Indian supply including most borewells. Buy 3,000 ppm only if you have measured above 1,500 ppm — in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Churu, Pali or coastal Tamil Nadu, for instance. Rating below your worst summer reading is how membranes die in five months.
Non-negotiable. It blends a measured amount of UF-filtered water back into the RO output so you land at a pleasant 60-120 ppm instead of a flat 25 ppm, and it lets you re-tune when your supply switches between municipal and tanker in summer.
A legacy RO rejects three litres per litre purified — roughly 16,000 litres a year for a family of four. High-recovery designs such as KENT's Save Water and AO Smith's Advanced Recovery halve that. In a city where you buy tankers, this is a line item, not a talking point.
Membrane, UV lamp, pre-filters and labour typically total ₹3,000-₹4,500 a year — which means consumables often cost more than the purifier over its life. We rank on that total, not on the launch price.
Weighted heavily, and decisively so outside metros. A brilliant purifier with no technician in your pin code is a worse purchase than an average one that gets serviced in 48 hours. Phone customer care with your pin code before ordering.
