Is 200MP Better Than 50MP? Phone Camera Megapixels Explained

Pixel binning

High-resolution sensors such as 108MP and 200MP usually combine groups of neighbouring pixels into one, producing a lower-resolution photo that is cleaner in low light. Full resolution is typically available as a separate mode and is most useful in bright light.

What to look for instead

  • A telephoto camera for real optical zoom.
  • Optical image stabilisation (OIS) on the main camera for low light and video.
  • An ultrawide camera for landscapes and interiors.
  • 4K video, ideally at 60fps, and 4K on the front camera if you record yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 200MP camera better than a 50MP camera?
Not automatically. A 200MP sensor can capture more detail in good light, but a well-tuned 50MP camera with a larger sensor, OIS and strong processing can take better everyday and low-light photos.
Do megapixels matter for video?
Very little. 4K video needs only about 8MP, so video quality depends on stabilisation, frame rate and processing rather than the photo megapixel count.
