Purifier Running Cost Calculator: What It Costs After You Buy It

What will this purifier cost you every year?

Purchase price is the number on the box. This is the number you actually live with — and over five years it is frequently larger than the price difference that decided the purchase.

Running cost

₹6,588 a year · ₹549 a month

Five-year total after purchase: ₹32,940

Electricity: ₹788 (99 units)

Filters & consumables: ₹4,000

Service / AMC: ₹1,800

Electricity share: 12% of the total

Electricity is almost never the cost worth optimising — filters and service are. That is why the right question in the showroom is “what does a full filter set cost and how often does it need changing”, not “how many watts does it draw”.

The purchase price of a purifier is the number the showroom talks about, and it is the smaller half of what you will pay. Over five years a mid-range RO purifier costs more in filters, membranes and service visits than it did to buy — and two units that looked ₹3,000 apart on day one can be ₹15,000 apart by year five.

That is why the useful question in a showroom is not how many stages the unit has, but what a full filter set costs, how often it is due, and whether those parts are stocked in your city. A purifier whose consumables are expensive or unavailable will quietly stop being maintained, which is the same thing as no longer working.

The figures below are indicative Indian benchmarks for a four-person household. Use them to sanity-check a quotation rather than as a price list — actual costs vary with water quality, air quality, usage and how honestly your service provider prices parts.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a water purifier use?
A typical RO purifier draws 25-60 W while the pump is running, which for a normal household is roughly 1-2 units a day at most — around ₹80-200 a month. It is a small figure compared with the ₹3,000-5,000 a year the filters and membrane cost, which is where the real running cost sits.
How much does an air purifier cost to run per month in India?
Electricity is roughly ₹80-250 a month for a unit drawing 15-60 W and running continuously. Filters add considerably more: ₹2,000-6,000 a year, or ₹170-500 a month spread out. Running it continuously on auto is both cheaper and more effective than short bursts on high.
What is the annual maintenance cost of an RO purifier in India?
Budget ₹3,000-5,000 a year for a domestic RO: pre-filters twice a year at ₹800-1,500, a UV lamp annually at around ₹800, and an RO membrane every 18-30 months at ₹1,500-2,500 amortised. An AMC typically costs ₹2,500-5,000 a year and bundles most of that with labour.
Is an AMC worth it for a water purifier?
Usually yes in years three onward, and often not in year one when the unit is still under warranty. The value is less about the parts than about someone attending on schedule — the most common cause of premature membrane failure is a pre-carbon cartridge nobody replaced. Insist the AMC records input and output TDS on every visit.
