Air purifiers are treated as appliances you plug in and forget, and they are not. They have a consumable that degrades invisibly, a sensor that drifts, and a pre-filter that needs monthly attention from the owner. Neglect all three and a ₹25,000 machine delivers a fraction of its rated performance while displaying a reassuring blue light.

The sensor is the most under-appreciated part. Optical particle sensors accumulate dust on the lens over months, which makes them read progressively worse air than is actually present. The purifier responds by running at high speed permanently — noisier, more power, and a HEPA filter consumed months ahead of schedule. Cleaning the sensor lens is a ten-minute job that frequently transforms a unit the owner had written off as broken.

What you should be doing monthly yourself

Wash the pre-filter. It is designed to be washed, it takes five minutes, and it is what stops coarse dust reaching the HEPA media.
Dry the pre-filter completely before refitting. A damp pre-filter grows mould inside a warm appliance.
Wipe the sensor intake vent — usually a small grille on the side — with a dry brush.
Check the intake is not blocked by furniture or curtains. Purifiers need clearance on the intake face to achieve rated CADR.
Do not wash the HEPA or carbon filter. Water destroys HEPA media permanently and saturates carbon.

Important

Filter indicator lights on most air purifiers are runtime timers, not sensors. A unit run 24/7 in Delhi in November will exhaust a HEPA filter long before the indicator turns amber, and a unit run two hours a day in Bengaluru will trigger the indicator with filter life to spare. Judge by hours run and local AQI, not by the light.

Diagnosing a purifier that seems to have stopped working

Reads 'good air' constantly, even next to a lit incense stick — sensor lens dirty or failed.
Reads poor air constantly and runs at full speed — same cause, opposite direction. Clean the sensor first.
Airflow noticeably weaker than when new — pre-filter clogged, or HEPA fully loaded.
Noisy or rattling — object in the fan housing, or a filter not seated in its frame.
Musty smell on start-up — damp pre-filter refitted before drying, or carbon stage saturated.
Unit will not start — check the filter-door safety interlock, which prevents operation if a filter is misseated.

When to service, city by city

In Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, Kolkata and the wider northern plain, service in September. Winter peaks push these cities well past AQI 400, purifiers run continuously for three months, and filter life compresses accordingly. Many households in these cities genuinely need two HEPA changes a year rather than one.

In Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad, an annual service before the dry season is sufficient and one filter change a year is normal. The exception is anyone living beside a construction site or a major arterial road, where PM10 load can rival a northern winter regardless of the city's headline AQI.

Can HEPA filters be washed and reused?

No. Washing destroys HEPA media permanently — the fibre structure that captures fine particles collapses when wet, and the filter looks intact while filtering very little. Only the pre-filter is washable. Any provider offering to wash your HEPA filter should not be servicing your unit.

Why does my air purifier always show poor air quality?

Almost always a dirty particle sensor. Optical sensors accumulate dust on the lens over months and read progressively worse air than is present, which makes the purifier run at full speed permanently and consume the HEPA filter months early. Cleaning and recalibrating the sensor takes ten minutes and usually resolves it completely.

How long do air purifier filters actually last?

HEPA filters last 8-12 months at typical usage, but genuinely less in high-AQI cities where the unit runs continuously — many Delhi households need two changes a year. Activated carbon lasts 6-12 months and saturates faster where cooking smoke, traffic fumes or smoking are present. Judge by hours run and local AQI, not by the indicator light.
