The Purifier Doctor
Eight questions, and you get a water or air profile: what you are actually dealing with, which laboratory tests are worth paying for, the technology specification that fits — and, where it applies, the plain statement that a purifier is not the thing you should buy next.
Almost every purifier recommendation tool in India is a product filter with a friendly interface. Its questions exist to narrow a catalogue, and its output is always a purchase, because an output that is not a purchase has no commercial function.
This one is built the other way round. The questions exist to establish what is actually wrong, and the output is whatever follows from that — which is sometimes a ₹25,000 system, sometimes a ₹2,000 carbon monoxide alarm, and sometimes a ₹1,500 laboratory test followed by a decision you are not yet in a position to make.
That is not altruism. It is the only version of this tool worth building, because the alternative — recommending equipment on the basis of answers the customer had to guess at — produces households that install RO for a bacteriological problem, UV for fluoride, or a softener for salty water. They will conclude that water treatment does not work, and on the evidence available to them they will be right.
Methodology
Published so you can check the reasoning rather than take the output on trust. This is the exact sequence the tool follows.
- Take the answers as given, and mark anything the user could not know — an unmeasured TDS is treated as an estimate and labelled as one, never quietly converted into a fact.
- Where a city is selected, apply the indicative source, TDS range, hardness and AQI figures held for that city, and state that they are indicative rather than a reading from the user's own supply.
- For water: derive the purification technology from source, TDS band, taste, hardness signs and household size, then derive storage capacity from household size and a realistic daily draw.
- For air: convert room dimensions to volume, choose an air-change target from city AQI, room type, concerns and how sealed the room is, then express the requirement as a CADR figure rather than a coverage claim.
- Test for interventions that outrank the product — a CO alarm where there is a gas appliance, extraction where cooking is the complaint, moisture control where there is damp, encasements where the problem is dust mites — and rank those above any purchase.
- Derive the laboratory tests that the profile cannot answer, including regional triggers for arsenic, fluoride and uranium based on documented occurrence in the selected state.
- Publish the reasoning alongside the conclusion, so every recommendation can be traced back to the answer that produced it.
City figures — TDS ranges, dominant source, hardness class and AQI — are indicative values for planning, not readings from your supply. The tool says so in its output whenever it has used them, and every water result ends by naming the tests that would replace an estimate with a measurement. Last reviewed 2026-08-08.
What this tool will not do
- It will not tell you what is in your water. No questionnaire can. Arsenic, lead, nitrate, fluoride and bacteria are undetectable by taste, appearance and TDS meter, and the honest end point of a set of questions is a list of tests.
- It will not name a single product as the answer. It produces a specification — technology, capacity, CADR, filter media — which is what you should shop against. A specification survives a model being discontinued; a product name does not.
- It will not quote you a firm price. Indicative bands are for budgeting. Anyone quoting a firm price for water treatment without a water analysis is guessing.
- It will not diagnose a health condition. Where an answer suggests one — mottled teeth, unexplained skin changes — the output says to test the water and to speak to a doctor, in that order and separately.
