1.5 ton is the most-sold size in India because it fits the most common Indian bedroom and living room. Buy an inverter model so it slows down once the room is cool rather than switching on and off.

Assumptions: about 90 BTU/h per square foot for a mid-floor room with a 10 ft ceiling, ordinary afternoon sun and two occupants, which matches the room-size bands Indian AC brands publish. Top floor adds 20%, strong west or south sun 15%, extreme dry heat 10%, and each extra person about 600 BTU/h. Treat it as a starting point — a room with unsealed doors or very large glass areas can need more.

Indian AC sizing advice looks strangely generous if you have read an American guide, and there is a good reason for it. A US rule of thumb allows 20-25 BTU per hour for each square foot. Indian brands publish room bands that work out to roughly 90 BTU per square foot, because an Indian room starts from 40°C or more outside, sits behind brick walls that soak up heat all day and release it all night, and usually has single-glazed windows. The calculator above uses the Indian figure, so its answers match what the brands themselves recommend.

The two adjustments that matter most are the ones buyers skip. A top-floor flat takes the full afternoon heat of the roof slab, which can add a fifth to the load, and a west-facing room with large windows adds another sixth. Put both together and a 150 sq ft bedroom that would be comfortable with 1.5 ton on the third floor of a five-storey building genuinely needs 2 ton on the fifth. Ceiling height is the third: you are cooling air, not floor, and a 12 ft ceiling adds 20%.

When the calculator lands between two sizes, prefer an inverter AC at the smaller size over a fixed-speed AC at the larger one, unless the room is a top-floor west-facing room in a 45°C city. An inverter compressor can briefly run above its nominal capacity to pull a hot room down, and then slows to hold temperature quietly — which covers most borderline rooms. For a hall above about 300 sq ft, split the load across two units rather than buying one very large one: the room cools evenly, and when one unit fails in May you still have the other.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1 ton AC enough for 100 or 120 sq ft?
Yes, for a mid-floor room with a 10 ft ceiling and ordinary sun. A 100 sq ft room needs about 0.75 ton and a 120 sq ft room about 0.9 ton by the rule Indian brands publish, so 1 ton covers both with a little headroom. The exception is a top-floor or west-facing room in a 45°C city: 120 sq ft there calculates to about 1.2 ton, and a 1.5 ton unit is the better buy.
Is a 1.5 ton AC right for 150 or 180 sq ft?
Yes. 150 sq ft calculates to about 1.1 ton and 180 sq ft to about 1.35 ton for an ordinary room, and 1.5 ton is the next size you can buy. It is also the most common room size in Indian flats, which is why 1.5 ton is the best-selling AC size in the country. On a top floor with afternoon sun, 180 sq ft reaches about 1.85 ton and 2 ton becomes the correct choice.
Do I need a 2 ton AC for 200, 250 or 300 sq ft?
For 200 sq ft, usually not: an ordinary mid-floor room calculates to 1.5 ton, and 2 ton is only needed on a top floor or with strong afternoon sun. For 250 sq ft, 2 ton is right in almost every case. At 300 sq ft the load is about 2.25 ton, which is more than one 2 ton unit delivers — two smaller units, or a 2 ton and a 1 ton, cool a room that size more evenly.
What happens if I buy a bigger AC than I need?
It cools the air faster than it can pull the moisture out, so the thermostat is satisfied while the room still feels damp and clammy — most noticeable in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. A fixed-speed oversized unit also cycles on and off, which is noisy and wears the compressor. An inverter AC hides some of the problem by slowing down, but you have still paid for capacity you will never use.
What happens if I buy a smaller AC than I need?
It runs at full power for hours and still does not reach the set temperature on a 44°C afternoon. That is the worst case for your electricity bill, because the inverter never gets to slow down, and it is hard on the compressor. Undersizing is the more expensive mistake of the two.
Does ceiling height change the AC size?
Yes, because you are cooling a volume of air, not a floor. The usual rules assume a 10 ft ceiling. A 12 ft ceiling in an older building adds roughly 20% to the load, which can push a borderline 1.5 ton room to 2 ton.
