The filter is the entire product. An air purifier is a fan, a sensor and a box built around a consumable, and once that consumable is loaded, the machine is moving air without cleaning much of it. Unlike a water purifier, where declining performance shows up as taste or flow, a spent HEPA filter gives you no symptom at all — the unit still hums, the light is still blue, and nothing tells you the delivered clean-air rate has halved.

Which is why replacement intervals matter and indicator lights do not. Most units count runtime and turn amber at a preset number of hours, on the assumption of moderate air. A purifier running twenty hours a day through a Delhi November is loading its filter several times faster than that assumption allows for, and a purifier running two hours a day in Bengaluru is nowhere near due when the light comes on.

The practical rule: judge by hours run against your local AQI, replace HEPA every 8-12 months in moderate air and every 5-8 in severe air, and buy before the season rather than during it.

What's included in air purifier filter replacement

This is the scope we ask providers to quote against. Holding every quote to the same list is what makes them comparable — otherwise you are choosing the cheapest number rather than the best value.

  • Filter condition assessed against actual usage hours before anything is replaced.
  • HEPA and/or activated carbon filter fitted and correctly seated in its frame.
  • Pre-filter washed and dried as part of the same visit.
  • Particle sensor lens cleaned and recalibrated — this is what protects the new filter.
  • Filter indicator reset properly, so future readings mean something.
  • Old filter shown to you and disposed of, or left behind if you prefer.
  • Airflow verified across all fan speeds after fitting.

Not included

  • Filters where you have asked us to fit parts you have sourced yourself — we will fit them, but cannot warrant them.

How it works

  1. 1Tell us what you needOne short form — your city, the job, and how soon you need it. Takes under a minute and costs nothing.
  2. 2We match you with local providersWe route your request to up to 3 verified providers who actually cover your area, so you are not waiting on someone forty kilometres away.
  3. 3Compare the quotesThey contact you directly, usually by WhatsApp so you get it in writing. Check what you are quoted against the indicative rates published on this page.
  4. 4Book whoever you wantYou deal with the provider directly and pay them for the work. There is no obligation to accept any quote.

Genuine versus compatible filters

Compatible third-party filters cost 40-60% less than manufacturer parts and the market for them in India is genuinely mixed. A well-made compatible H13 filter from a supplier who publishes test data is a reasonable purchase. A ₹700 'HEPA' filter from a marketplace listing with no grade stated is usually pleated polyester that captures coarse dust and very little of the fine particulate you bought the machine for.

What to check: the filter must state a HEPA grade (H13 or H14 for meaningful fine-particle capture), the pleat density should visibly resemble the original, and the frame must seat properly — a filter that does not seal lets air bypass it entirely, which is worse than a partly loaded original.

Our position is that compatible carbon filters are usually fine, and compatible HEPA is worth buying carefully rather than cheaply. On premium units with sealed filter architectures, genuine is generally the safer choice because bypass is the failure mode and the tolerances are tight.

Tip

Write the fitting date on the filter frame with a marker before it goes in. A year from now the indicator light will have been reset at some point, the app history will have been lost in a firmware update, and the frame will still say.

How to tell a filter is genuinely due

  • Visibly grey or blackened HEPA media across the whole face, not just at the intake edge.
  • Airflow on maximum noticeably weaker than you remember, with the pre-filter already clean.
  • The unit sitting at high fan speed constantly in air that other measurements say is fine — check the sensor first, then the filter.
  • Persistent odour that the carbon stage used to remove — carbon saturation, which happens faster than HEPA loading in kitchens and near traffic.
  • Hours run: roughly 3,000-4,000 hours for HEPA in moderate air, considerably less in severe air.

Buying ahead of the season

Every year, filter availability across the Indian market tightens sharply from the last week of October, and by mid-November popular models are on backorder while prices firm. This is entirely predictable and entirely avoidable.

If you are in Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Lucknow or anywhere else with a genuine winter smog season, buy your filters in September and have them fitted with the annual service. If your household runs two or more purifiers continuously through winter, buy the second set at the same time — you will need it in January, and January is a worse time to be looking.

Local water chemistry and air quality change both the schedule and the cost, so each city page carries advice specific to that city rather than a swapped name.

What "verified" means

It is a specific claim, so here is exactly what it covers. Every provider on this network has:

  • Government photo ID and address verified at onboarding
  • Business registration or GST number on file where applicable
  • References checked from at least three completed jobs
  • Agreed to publish itemised pricing before starting work
  • Agreed to record input and output TDS on every service slip
  • Removed from the network after two unresolved customer complaints

Verification covers identity, registration and references. It is not a guarantee of workmanship on any individual job, and we are not a party to the contract between you and the provider — you engage and pay them directly. If a job goes wrong, tell us: providers are removed from the network after two unresolved complaints.

Air Purifier Filter Replacement — FAQs

How much does an air purifier filter cost?
True HEPA filters cost ₹1,500-₹3,000 for compact units, ₹2,500-₹4,500 for mid-size units and ₹4,000-₹9,000 for large or premium models. Activated carbon filters run ₹800-₹3,000 and combined HEPA-plus-carbon cartridges ₹2,500-₹7,000. Fitting is ₹200-₹500 standalone, or included within a service visit.
How often should air purifier filters be replaced?
HEPA every 8-12 months in moderate air and every 5-8 months where the unit runs continuously in severe air — many Delhi NCR households need two changes a year. Activated carbon every 6-12 months, faster in kitchens or near traffic. Judge by hours run and local AQI rather than the indicator light, which is a runtime timer.
Are compatible air purifier filters any good?
Mixed. Compatible carbon filters are usually fine. For HEPA, buy carefully: the filter must state an H13 or H14 grade, have pleat density comparable to the original, and seat properly in the frame, because a filter that does not seal lets air bypass it entirely. On premium units with sealed filter architectures, genuine is the safer choice.
Can I replace an air purifier filter myself?
On most consumer units, yes — it is a clip-off front panel and a cartridge. Two things people miss: the filter must seat fully or air bypasses it, and the indicator must be reset properly or future readings are meaningless. It is also worth having the particle sensor cleaned at the same time, which is fiddlier and is what protects the new filter.
Which cities do you cover for air purifier filter replacement?
India's metro cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad — plus the NCR and MMR satellites Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Thane, Navi Mumbai, which share the same technician supply pool. We publish a city only where we can genuinely route your request to providers who will call back, which is why the list is deliberately shorter than the 200 cities we cover editorially.
Is it free to get air purifier filter replacement quotes?
Yes. You pay the provider directly for the work they do, and never us for the introduction. There is no obligation to accept any quote and no cancellation charge, because nothing is committed until you engage a provider yourself.
