Water tank cleaning is the most neglected item in Indian domestic water management, and it is upstream of everything else you do. Your purifier, however good, treats whatever your tank hands it. Sediment, biofilm, algae in translucent overhead tanks, and in older sumps the occasional dead pigeon — all of it sits between the municipal main and your kitchen.

Why this matters more than another purifier stage

Households facing taste or odour problems tend to reach for a better purifier. Very often the correct spend is a fraction of that, applied one step upstream. A tank that has not been opened in four years is contributing sediment load that shortens your pre-filter life, biofilm that reintroduces bacteria downstream of your UV stage, and in translucent overhead tanks, algae that a purifier's carbon stage then has to work around.

Important

Never send anyone into an underground sump without confined-space precautions. Sumps accumulate low-oxygen and occasionally toxic atmospheres, and fatalities during informal tank cleaning are a documented and entirely preventable problem in India. This is a real reason to use an equipped provider rather than a handyman.

What to check before and after

Before: agree the disinfectant being used and confirm it is food-grade and rinsed, not industrial bleach left to dissipate.
Before: agree who arranges the refill, and whether a tanker is needed.
During: confirm sludge is being vacuumed out, not flushed into your drainage.
After: request before-and-after photographs of the tank interior.
After: check the lid seal and overflow mesh were inspected — an unsealed lid is how the tank got dirty.
After: run taps for a few minutes and confirm no residual chlorine smell before drinking.

Society sumps and overhead tanks are best handled on an annual contract with two scheduled cleanings, because coordinating a one-off across a committee reliably means it does not happen. A contract also gives you a documented cleaning record, which matters if a water-quality complaint is ever raised formally.

Cleaning the tank is usually the cheaper half of a taste or odour problem.
