Air Quality
Humidifiers: Types, Hygiene and Whether You Actually Need One
A humidifier adds water vapour to room air. In the dry North Indian winter — where indoor relative humidity can fall below 25% — that genuinely helps with dry throat, cracked skin, nosebleeds and the irritation that makes a cold feel worse.
But it is also the appliance most often bought for the wrong reasons, in the wrong climate, and then maintained badly enough to make indoor air worse than before. Two facts do most of the work here: humidifiers do not clean air, and a dirty humidifier disperses what is growing in its tank directly into the room you sleep in.
So before buying one, measure. A ₹300 hygrometer will tell you whether you have a humidity problem at all.
The three types, and what each gets wrong
| Type | How it works | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic (cool mist) | A vibrating plate atomises water into a fine visible mist | Very quiet, low power, cheap | Produces 'white dust' from dissolved minerals; aerosolises tank bacteria; can over-humidify quickly |
| Evaporative (wick) | A fan blows air through a wet wick | Self-limiting — cannot over-humidify; no white dust; minerals stay in the wick | Fan noise; wick needs regular replacement |
| Steam / warm mist | Boils water and releases steam | Boiling kills tank organisms; no white dust | High power draw; hot water is a burn risk near children |
Important
Correct humidity targets
This is why geography matters more than anything else in this category. Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow and Chandigarh in December frequently sit below 30% indoors, and a humidifier is genuinely useful. Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Kolkata spend much of the year above 70%, where adding moisture is actively harmful.
| Relative humidity | Effect |
|---|---|
| Below 30% | Dry airways, cracked skin, static, worsened cold symptoms. A humidifier helps here. |
| 30 – 40% | Slightly dry. Marginal case. |
| 40 – 60% | The target band. Comfortable, and unfavourable for both mites and viruses. |
| 60 – 70% | Dust mites and mould begin to thrive. Do not humidify into this range. |
| Above 70% | Active mould risk. You need a dehumidifier, not a humidifier. |
Hygiene — the part that actually matters
- Empty and dry the tank daily if you can. Standing water grows biofilm within days.
- Clean thoroughly every 2–3 days with a dilute vinegar solution, and rinse well. Do not leave water sitting between uses.
- Replace evaporative wicks on schedule. A grey, stiff or smelly wick is a microbial habitat.
- Never add essential oils to a tank not designed for them — they degrade plastics and can damage the transducer.
- Do not run a humidifier in a room you are also trying to keep clean unless you are confident of the tank hygiene. A dirty humidifier and an air purifier are working against each other.
Important
When a humidifier is the wrong purchase
- Your measured indoor RH is already above 50%.
- You live in a coastal or high-humidity city for most of the year.
- You actually want cleaner air — that is a purifier, and a humidifier will not help.
- You want relief from dust allergy — raising humidity above 60% increases dust mite populations, which usually makes it worse.
- You will not commit to cleaning the tank every few days. In that case the appliance becomes a liability.
Prices and options
| Budget | Type | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 – ₹2,500 | Small ultrasonic, 1–2 L | A single desk or bedside; use RO water |
| ₹2,500 – ₹5,000 | Ultrasonic 3–5 L with humidistat | One bedroom overnight |
| ₹5,000 – ₹12,000 | Evaporative with humidistat | The safer choice — no white dust, cannot over-humidify |
| ₹12,000 – ₹25,000 | Large evaporative or combined purifier-humidifier | Living rooms; only if you will maintain the tank |
Indicative Indian market ranges for budgeting, not quotations. Prices move frequently — always confirm on the marketplace or with a supplier before purchasing.
