An alkaline water purifier is a normal RO purifier with one extra cartridge at the end that raises output pH, typically into the 8.5-9.5 band. The purification work is done by the RO, UV and UF stages ahead of it; the alkaline stage only changes chemistry after the water is already safe.
We should be straight with you about the health claims, because almost nobody selling these products is. Your stomach maintains a strongly acidic environment by design, and your blood pH is regulated within a very narrow range regardless of what you drink. There is no good clinical evidence that drinking alkaline water changes health outcomes in healthy adults. Claims about curing acidity, 'alkalising the body' or preventing disease are not supported.
What is true is that many people genuinely prefer how higher-pH water tastes — smoother, less sharp. That is a legitimate reason to buy one. For safety, no — they are equally safe, because the alkaline cartridge sits after the RO membrane and does not add protection. For taste, many people prefer alkaline water's smoother mouthfeel. What is the ideal pH of drinking water?
The Bureau of Indian Standards specification for drinking water (IS 10500) accepts a pH range of 6.5 to 8.5. Alkaline purifiers typically output 8.5 to 9.5, which is slightly above that band but not harmful for normal consumption. If you have a kidney condition or take medication affected by gastric pH, ask your doctor before switching.
Does alkaline water help acidity?
