Three decisions matter far more than the brand, and they come in this order. First the type: a front loader tumbles clothes gently, uses the least water and spins them driest, but costs more and runs longer cycles; a fully automatic top loader is quicker, easier to load and cheaper; a semi-automatic is the cheapest and the only sensible choice where water supply is irregular. Second the capacity: 6–6.5 kg for one or two people, 7–8 kg for a family of four, 9 kg and above for larger families or for washing blankets at home. Third, whether you need an in-built heater — yes if your water is hard, which most borewell and many municipal supplies in India are.

After that, look for an inverter or direct-drive motor (quieter, more efficient, longer motor warranty) and compare the BEE star label for running cost. Features like Wi-Fi, 'AI' wash and dozens of programmes are rarely decisive. The one thing worth checking before any feature is service: pick the brand that has a technician in your pin code.
