A conventional domestic RO discards roughly three litres of reject water for every litre it purifies. For a family drinking 15 litres a day, that is around 45 litres down the drain daily — over 16,000 litres a year. In a city where you buy tanker water, that is a line item on your monthly bill.

'Zero waste' is a marketing overstatement — reverse osmosis physically cannot operate without a reject stream, because the whole mechanism depends on concentrated brine being carried away from the membrane. What the best modern designs do is recirculate reject water back to the inlet, pushing recovery from around 25% to 50% or better. AO Smith's Advanced Recovery Technology and KENT's Save Water technology are the two most substantive implementations.

The other half of the answer costs nothing: plumb the reject line into a bucket or a storage drum and use it for mopping, flushing and washing vehicles. Reject water is not sewage — it is simply more concentrated than your supply. Do not use it for plants if your supply is hard, as the salt load will accumulate in the soil.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a truly zero-waste RO purifier?
No. Reverse osmosis works by rejecting concentrated brine away from the membrane, so a reject stream is intrinsic to the physics. What exists is high-recovery RO, which recirculates reject water to reach 50% or better recovery instead of the traditional 25%. Anything advertised as literally zero-waste RO is overstating.
How much water does an RO purifier waste?
A conventional domestic RO rejects about 3 litres for every 1 litre purified — roughly 75% of throughput. High-recovery models such as the AO Smith Z9 or KENT Grand Plus bring that to around 1 litre rejected per litre purified. Over a year, that difference is on the order of 8,000-10,000 litres for a typical family.
Can I reuse RO reject water?
Yes, and you should. Collect it in a bucket or drum and use it for floor mopping, toilet flushing, washing vehicles or cleaning utensils in a pre-rinse. Avoid using it on plants if your input water is hard or high in TDS, because the concentrated salts will build up in the soil over time.
