Car Air Purifiers: An Honest Assessment (and a Better Alternative)
Car cabins are a genuinely bad air environment in Indian conditions, and for a reason people rarely consider: you spend your commute sitting directly in the exhaust plume of the vehicle in front. Measurements in heavy traffic routinely show in-cabin PM2.5 exceeding nearby roadside ambient levels, particularly when the fresh-air intake is open behind a bus or truck.
So the problem is real. The trouble is that the product category built to address it is mostly ineffective. A cabin is small, but it also leaks constantly and is continuously fed polluted air through the ventilation system, and a palm-sized device moving a few cubic metres an hour cannot compete with that.
There is a better answer, and it costs less than most of the gadgets.
What actually improves car cabin air

The cabin filter upgrade, explained
Almost every modern car has a cabin air filter in the HVAC path, usually behind the glovebox. Most come with a basic particulate filter, and many owners have never changed it. Upgrading to a HEPA-grade or activated-carbon-impregnated replacement is the highest-value air-quality modification available for a car.
The reason it beats a gadget is throughput. Your car's blower moves a large volume of air through that filter every minute. A cup-holder purifier processes a tiny fraction of that. Filtering the main airflow is simply a different order of intervention.
- Check your owner's manual for the filter location and part number, then look for a HEPA-grade or carbon-activated equivalent.
- Replace every 10,000–15,000 km, or more often in Delhi-NCR and other high-dust cities.
- A carbon-impregnated filter also reduces the diesel and exhaust smell, which a plain particulate filter does not.
- If your car's airflow has weakened noticeably, a clogged cabin filter is the most likely cause.
If you still want a portable unit
- Require a stated CADR figure in m³/h. No CADR means no measurement.
- Require a genuine HEPA filter, not 'HEPA-type', and check that replacement filters are available.
- Reject anything whose primary mechanism is ionisation, and anything mentioning ozone or 'activated oxygen'.
- Prefer a unit that can be secured. An unrestrained object on a dashboard is a projectile in a collision.
- Consider a compact home purifier such as a Levoit Core 300S run on a 12 V inverter while parked — it will move considerably more air than most car-specific devices.
- Use it as a supplement to recirculation and a good cabin filter, not instead of them.
