India does not have one water problem, it has several — and that is why most 'best water purifier' lists are useless. A ranking that puts the same RO unit at number one for a reader in Kochi (soft municipal supply, 120 ppm) and a reader in Jodhpur (brackish groundwater, 1,600 ppm) is not giving advice to either of them.
So we start from the water. Below is our overall ranking, but the more useful thing on this page is the set of specific lists underneath it: by technology, by water problem, by budget. If your supply is treated municipal water under 200 ppm, the correct recommendation is a ₹2,800 gravity purifier or a UV+UF unit — not a ₹20,000 RO that will strip your minerals and waste 16,000 litres a year solving a problem you do not have.
One more thing we weight heavily and most reviews ignore: whether anyone will service the thing. In this category the hardware is largely commoditised and the failure mode is almost never the membrane — it is a technician who never turns up. That is why KENT and Aquaguard keep appearing near the top of our tier-3 recommendations even where their specifications are not the best on paper, and why we tell you to phone customer care with your pin code before you order.
Choosing a water purifier for home
A water purifier for home should match the source water and the installation, rather than a brand name or a stage count alone. Compare the treatment specified for each model, its stated input limits, storage capacity and replacement filter requirements. A TDS reading alone does not establish whether drinking water is safe; use appropriate water testing when the source or contamination is uncertain.
When comparing Kent, Aquaguard, Pureit, AO Smith or another brand, check the exact model and current seller listing. Ask for a written installation quote and the consumable part numbers. An under-sink water purifier also needs accessible plumbing, cabinet clearance and a suitable route for any drain connection.
