Ventilation and energy are in genuine tension. Increasing the fresh-air fraction raises cooling load and cost. A good audit quantifies both sides so the decision is explicit — often recommending heat recovery or demand-controlled ventilation, which improve air quality without a proportional energy penalty.

These are cheap, fast and usually deliver the largest measured improvement.

Then targeted filtration: standalone HEPA units in the specific zones that still fail after ventilation is corrected — typically ground-floor spaces near parking or arterial roads, and rooms with unavoidable local sources. This is a much shorter list than the one-per-zone assumption most facilities teams start with.
