A commercial RO plant is not a bigger domestic purifier. It is a different class of equipment: stainless-steel construction rather than moulded plastic, industrial membranes in FRP pressure vessels, a proper pre-treatment train, and control logic designed for continuous duty rather than a few litres a day.

That distinction is the most expensive lesson in this category. Putting a domestic unit into a 40-person office pantry runs it near-continuously, exhausts consumables in a third of their rated life, and typically kills it inside eighteen months. The per-litre cost of a correctly specified commercial system is far lower than the per-litre cost of replacing domestic units.

Commercial capacities run from 25 LPH for a clinic or small office up to 500 LPH for a factory canteen or hospital. Above that you are in industrial territory, where PLC control, SS-316 options and energy recovery come into play.

What separates a commercial system from a domestic one

  • Construction — SS-304 (or SS-316 for aggressive water) chassis and piping instead of ABS plastic, rated for continuous duty and washdown.
  • Pressure vessels — industrial FRP housings with replaceable spiral-wound membranes rather than sealed cartridges.
  • Pre-treatment — dedicated multigrade sand and activated carbon vessels, sized to feed quality, instead of a single sediment cartridge.
  • Controls — HPS (high pressure sensor), dry-run protection, low/high pressure cut-off, auto flushing, and level-based auto start-stop.
  • Serviceability — every component individually replaceable, so a pump failure does not mean a new machine.

Sizing a commercial system correctly

Two numbers drive the specification: daily demand in litres, and the hours over which you can produce it. Producing 1,000 litres a day over 10 working hours needs 100 LPH; producing the same volume in a 3-hour lunch peak needs either 330 LPH or adequate buffer storage.

Storage is usually the cheaper answer. Sizing the plant for peak instantaneous draw is how buyers end up paying for capacity that sits idle 80% of the day.

Multi-stage purification architecture

Commercial and industrial systems are engineered as a treatment train, not a single appliance. Each module protects the one after it, and skipping a stage to save capex is the most common reason plants fail early.

  • Pre-treatment module — multigrade sand filter removes suspended solids and turbidity; activated carbon filter strips chlorine and organics that would oxidise the RO membrane.
  • Softening or antiscalant dosing — protects membranes from calcium and magnesium scaling. On hard feed water this is not optional.
  • High-pressure RO module — heavy-duty booster pump drives feed water through industrial spiral-wound membranes at 12-18 bar.
  • Post-treatment disinfection — UV disinfection and/or ozonation, with mineral dosing where potable taste matters.

Tip

Ask any vendor to show you the pre-treatment specification, not just the RO capacity. An undersized pre-treatment train is the single most common cause of premature membrane failure and unplanned downtime.

Total cost of ownership, not just capex

Capital cost is usually 30-40% of what a commercial water system costs you over five years. The rest is power, membrane and cartridge replacement, reject water, and labour. Two plants with identical price tags can differ by 60% in five-year TCO.

  • Power — energy-efficient pumps and correctly sized motors are the largest controllable operating cost on plants above 500 LPH.
  • Recovery ratio — a plant recovering 70% instead of 45% cuts both your feed water bill and your reject disposal volume substantially.
  • Membrane life — driven almost entirely by pre-treatment quality and flushing discipline, not by membrane brand.
  • Consumables — cartridge filters, antiscalant and salt for softener regeneration, budgeted monthly rather than as surprises.
  • AMC and downtime — for a production facility, unplanned downtime usually dwarfs every other line item.

Installation, commissioning and service response

Commercial buyers are buying uptime, so the commercial terms matter as much as the equipment specification. Insist on these being written into the purchase order rather than discussed verbally.

  • Site survey and feed-water analysis before the final quotation — never accept a specification produced without a water report.
  • Defined commissioning scope: civil and electrical prerequisites, who supplies what, and a documented performance test at handover.
  • Written service response times, with escalation, and clarity on whether spares are held locally.
  • Operator training and a laminated SOP left on site, so routine flushing and cartridge changes do not depend on one person.
  • Warranty terms stated separately for membranes, pumps, vessels and instrumentation, because they differ.

What is the price of a 100 LPH commercial RO plant in India?
Indicatively ₹75,000 to ₹1,50,000 for a 100 LPH commercial RO system. The range is driven by chassis material (SS-304 versus painted MS), the pre-treatment train your feed water requires, whether UV post-disinfection and a TDS controller are included, and storage. High-TDS or high-hardness feed water pushes cost toward the upper end because it needs a larger pre-treatment train and antiscalant dosing.
Can I use a domestic water purifier for commercial use?
Only for very small loads, up to roughly 15 people. Domestic purifiers are engineered for about 20 litres a day; commercial demand runs them continuously, which exhausts filters in a fraction of their rated life and typically destroys the unit within 12-18 months. Warranty terms also frequently exclude commercial use — check before relying on one.
What does LPH mean in an RO plant?
LPH is litres per hour — the plant's rated purified-water output per hour of operation. A 100 LPH plant produces about 100 litres of treated water every hour it runs, so roughly 800-1,000 litres over a working day. Note that rated LPH assumes design feed conditions; output falls as feed TDS rises and as membranes age.
What is the typical lead time for commercial installation?
Standard commercial systems from 100 to 500 LPH are typically installed within 48-72 hours of site readiness, since they are skid-built and largely pre-assembled. Custom industrial plants generally need 7-14 days depending on site readiness, civil work, electrical provisioning and whether non-standard materials such as SS-316 wetted parts are specified.
Do you offer Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC)?
Yes. Commercial installations can be covered by comprehensive AMC packages including scheduled preventive visits, membrane and cartridge replacement, and priority breakdown response. Comprehensive AMC (parts included) typically runs 10-14% of capital cost annually; non-comprehensive (labour and visits only) runs 5-8%. Get the inclusions listed line by line before signing.
Can the system integrate with our existing overhead tanks, coolers or chillers?
Yes. Commercial systems use high-pressure sensors and level-based auto start-stop, which allows plug-and-play integration with external storage tanks, water coolers and chillers. Tell us your existing tank capacity, height and any chiller model at enquiry stage so the pump head and control logic are specified correctly.
What water analysis do you need before quoting?
At minimum: TDS, pH, total hardness, chlorides, iron and turbidity. For industrial applications also silica, sulphates, and microbiological load. Do you handle high-TDS and brackish feed water?
Yes. Brackish water RO configurations handle feed water well above standard municipal input — commonly specified up to 3,000+ ppm, and higher with two-pass or seawater-class membranes. High-TDS feed changes the membrane selection, the pump pressure, the recovery ratio and the reject volume, so it must be established before design rather than after.
