A commercial RO plant is not a bigger domestic purifier. It is a different class of equipment: stainless-steel construction rather than moulded plastic, industrial membranes in FRP pressure vessels, a proper pre-treatment train, and control logic designed for continuous duty rather than a few litres a day.
That distinction is the most expensive lesson in this category. Putting a domestic unit into a 40-person office pantry runs it near-continuously, exhausts consumables in a third of their rated life, and typically kills it inside eighteen months. The per-litre cost of a correctly specified commercial system is far lower than the per-litre cost of replacing domestic units.
Commercial capacities run from 25 LPH for a clinic or small office up to 500 LPH for a factory canteen or hospital. Above that you are in industrial territory, where PLC control, SS-316 options and energy recovery come into play.

What separates a commercial system from a domestic one
- Construction — SS-304 (or SS-316 for aggressive water) chassis and piping instead of ABS plastic, rated for continuous duty and washdown.
- Pressure vessels — industrial FRP housings with replaceable spiral-wound membranes rather than sealed cartridges.
- Pre-treatment — dedicated multigrade sand and activated carbon vessels, sized to feed quality, instead of a single sediment cartridge.
- Controls — HPS (high pressure sensor), dry-run protection, low/high pressure cut-off, auto flushing, and level-based auto start-stop.
- Serviceability — every component individually replaceable, so a pump failure does not mean a new machine.
Sizing a commercial system correctly
Two numbers drive the specification: daily demand in litres, and the hours over which you can produce it. Producing 1,000 litres a day over 10 working hours needs 100 LPH; producing the same volume in a 3-hour lunch peak needs either 330 LPH or adequate buffer storage.
Storage is usually the cheaper answer. Sizing the plant for peak instantaneous draw is how buyers end up paying for capacity that sits idle 80% of the day.

Multi-stage purification architecture
Commercial and industrial systems are engineered as a treatment train, not a single appliance. Each module protects the one after it, and skipping a stage to save capex is the most common reason plants fail early.
- Pre-treatment module — multigrade sand filter removes suspended solids and turbidity; activated carbon filter strips chlorine and organics that would oxidise the RO membrane.
- Softening or antiscalant dosing — protects membranes from calcium and magnesium scaling. On hard feed water this is not optional.

- Recovery ratio — a plant recovering 70% instead of 45% cuts both your feed water bill and your reject disposal volume substantially.
- Membrane life — driven almost entirely by pre-treatment quality and flushing discipline, not by membrane brand.
- Consumables — cartridge filters, antiscalant and salt for softener regeneration, budgeted monthly rather than as surprises.
- AMC and downtime — for a production facility, unplanned downtime usually dwarfs every other line item.
Installation, commissioning and service response
Commercial buyers are buying uptime, so the commercial terms matter as much as the equipment specification. Insist on these being written into the purchase order rather than discussed verbally.
- Site survey and feed-water analysis before the final quotation — never accept a specification produced without a water report.
- Defined commissioning scope: civil and electrical prerequisites, who supplies what, and a documented performance test at handover.
- Written service response times, with escalation, and clarity on whether spares are held locally.
- Operator training and a laminated SOP left on site, so routine flushing and cartridge changes do not depend on one person.
- Warranty terms stated separately for membranes, pumps, vessels and instrumentation, because they differ.
