Water Dispensers: Bottled, Bottle-Less and Point-of-Use Compared

A water dispenser is a delivery device rather than a purification technology, and that distinction is where the decision lies. Some dispensers purify water themselves; others simply dispense water someone else purified and delivered in a jar.

In Indian offices the default has long been the 20-litre jar on a floor-standing cooler, and it is worth examining honestly, because the true cost is rarely calculated. Jar cost, deposits, breakage, delivery reliability, the storage space for full and empty jars, and someone's time spent lifting 20 kg onto a dispenser — none of that appears on a per-jar invoice, and all of it is real.

Tip

The honest test for an office: total your monthly jar spend, add deposits and breakage, then add the labour time spent receiving, storing and lifting jars. Compare against a commercial POU system amortised over five years plus its AMC. POU usually wins comfortably above about 20 people.

Jar hygiene — the part nobody inspects

  • The jar neck is handled repeatedly and rarely cleaned. Wipe it with a sanitising wipe before inverting.
  • The dispenser's puncture probe or seat sits in water permanently and grows biofilm. Clean it monthly.
  • Internal reservoirs in jar coolers hold standing water at room temperature — the classic biofilm environment. Sanitise quarterly.
  • Jars stored in sunlight promote algal growth. Store away from light.
  • Check that your supplier is BIS-certified under IS 14543 for packaged drinking water, and ask to see current test reports.
  • Refilled, unbranded jars of unknown provenance are a genuine risk. Cheap jar water is often cheap for a reason.

Hot and cold — what to check

  • CHILD LOCK on the hot tap is mandatory, not optional. Look for a two-step action or a mechanical lock, and consider mounting height in a home with toddlers.
  • Power draw is real: typically 300–500 W while heating. On an inverter or in a load-shedding area, check whether heating can be disabled.
  • Compressor cooling chills properly; thermoelectric (Peltier) cooling is quieter and cheaper but only manages a modest temperature drop, which disappoints in an Indian summer.
  • Hot tank capacity determines how many cups you get in succession before it needs to reheat.
  • Stainless-steel tanks resist biofilm far better than plastic, and matter more in humid climates.
  • Standby power on always-hot units adds up. Some models have a night/eco mode worth using.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bottle-less water dispenser better than a 20-litre jar?
For any premises with mains supply, generally yes. A point-of-use dispenser purifies your own water on site, so there is no recurring jar cost, no lifting, no storage, and no running out when delivery is late. Jar dispensers make sense mainly for temporary sites or where plumbing access is impossible. Above roughly 20 people in an office, POU usually wins decisively on total cost.
Are water dispensers hygienic?
It depends on maintenance and type. Jar dispensers have several recontamination points — the jar neck, the puncture probe and an internal reservoir of standing water at room temperature — all of which need regular sanitising. Point-of-use systems have a sealed path and fewer exposures, but still need periodic tank sanitisation. In both cases, hygiene is a maintenance habit rather than a product feature.
How much electricity does a hot and cold water dispenser use?
Typically 300–500 W while actively heating, plus standby consumption to hold the hot tank at temperature, and compressor draw when chilling. Most households see ₹150–₹400 a month depending on use. If you run on an inverter or in a load-shedding area, check whether the heating function can be switched off.
Do water dispensers purify water?
Only point-of-use models do. A bottle-less POU dispenser contains a purifier — typically RO, UV or both — and treats your mains water on site. A jar dispenser purifies nothing; it dispenses water that was purified elsewhere, so its output quality is entirely your supplier's responsibility.
