Water Quality Testing: Kits, Lab Tests and What to Test For
A TDS meter tells you which purification technology you need. A water test tells you whether your water is safe — and those are genuinely different questions. The gap between them is where the most serious water-related health risks in India sit, because the contaminants that cause cumulative, irreversible harm are invisible, tasteless and do not move a TDS reading.
If you are on municipal treated supply in a city with no documented groundwater contamination issue, a TDS reading plus a basic home kit is a reasonable level of diligence. If you are on a borewell, or anywhere in a documented arsenic or fluoride belt, a laboratory test is not optional — it is the single highest-value ₹2,000 you will spend on water.

What to test for, by situation
- MUNICIPAL SUPPLY, no known local issue — TDS, pH, hardness, free chlorine. Home kit is reasonable.
- BOREWELL, anywhere — full physico-chemical panel plus microbiology: TDS, pH, hardness, chlorides, iron, nitrate, fluoride, sulphate, and total coliform.
- GANGA–BRAHMAPUTRA BELT (West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, eastern UP) — add ARSENIC explicitly. This is the priority parameter in these states.
- RAJASTHAN, GUJARAT, ANDHRA PRADESH, TELANGANA — add FLUORIDE explicitly.
- NEAR INDUSTRY, TANNERIES OR PLATING UNITS — add heavy metals: lead, chromium, cadmium.
- COASTAL AREAS — add chlorides and check for salinity ingress.
- AGRICULTURAL AREAS — nitrate and pesticide screening.
- COMMERCIAL / INDUSTRIAL FEED — add silica, sulphates, alkalinity and SDI, which constrain RO recovery and pre-treatment design.
Important
How to collect a sample properly
A laboratory result is only as good as the sample. Poor collection technique produces confidently wrong numbers, which is worse than no test.
- Use the containers the laboratory provides. Different parameters need different bottles and preservatives, and microbiology needs a sterile container.
- For a chemical sample, run the tap for 2–3 minutes first to flush standing water from the pipe, unless you are specifically testing for lead leaching from your own plumbing.
- For a microbiological sample, sterilise the tap outlet (flame or alcohol wipe), run briefly, then fill without touching the bottle rim or cap interior.
- Fill chemical bottles completely with no air gap where instructed.
- Label with date, time, exact source (which tap, borewell or tank) and your name.
- Deliver to the lab the same day, chilled. Microbiological samples degrade within hours — a coliform result from a sample that sat in a car for a day is meaningless.
- If you draw from multiple sources, sample each separately. A blended sample tells you about a blend that may not exist at any tap.
Costs and where to test
- Use a NABL-accredited laboratory. Accreditation is what makes the result defensible, and it matters if you later need it for a society dispute or a regulatory submission.
- Many state public health engineering departments and municipal laboratories test water at low cost for residents — worth checking before going private.
- Commercial and industrial buyers should ask the treatment supplier which parameters they need before testing, so you pay for one complete panel rather than two partial ones.

When to test
- Before buying any purifier — this determines what you actually need.
- Before specifying any commercial or industrial system. No credible quotation exists without it.
- Annually if you use groundwater, because aquifer chemistry shifts with water table and season.
- After any borewell deepening or new borewell — the chemistry can change completely.
- After local pipeline work, flooding, or any supply interruption, particularly for microbiology.
- If anyone in the household develops unexplained recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms.
- If you notice new staining, scaling, odour, taste change or discolouration.
