Air Purifier Accessories: What's Worth Buying, What Isn't

Most air purifier accessories are optional. A handful genuinely improve either performance or the odds that you keep using the machine, and a few actively work against the purpose of owning one.

The useful frame is this: accessories that reduce the load on your HEPA filter, or that reduce how much unfiltered air enters the room, are worth money. Accessories that add something to the air are not.

Worth buying

AccessoryIndicative priceWhy it helps
Washable pre-filter wrap₹300 – ₹800Catches hair and coarse dust before the HEPA. Rinse weekly. Best value accessory, especially with pets.
Smart plug₹500 – ₹1,200Schedules the purifier around your routine and lets you pre-clean a bedroom before sleep. Also gives you real power-consumption data.
Door draught seal / window tape₹200 – ₹900Reduces unfiltered air ingress. Not marketed as a purifier accessory, but improves indoor PM2.5 more than most that are.
Wall mount bracket₹800 – ₹2,500Frees floor space in a small bedroom, keeps the unit out of a toddler's reach, and improves intake clearance.
Castor base / trolley₹700 – ₹2,000Lets one unit follow you between rooms, which is a sensible strategy if you cannot buy one per room.
Spare filter (bought early)VariesBuying the next filter before the current one expires means you never run a spent filter waiting on delivery.

Not worth buying

  • Fragrance pads, aroma attachments and essential-oil diffuser add-ons — these introduce volatile organic compounds into air you are paying to clean. If you want a scent, that is a separate choice, not an air-quality one.
  • 'HEPA-type' replacement filters sold as upgrades. They are a downgrade.
  • Ozone or 'active oxygen' modules. Ozone is a respiratory irritant; adding one to a filtration purifier is a step backwards.
  • UV retrofit lamps for units not designed for them. Contact time in a domestic airflow is too short to do much, and an unshielded UV-C source is a genuine eye and skin hazard.
  • Decorative covers that restrict intake or outlet airflow. Anything blocking clearance around the unit lowers its effective CADR.

Tip

The cheapest performance upgrade is not an accessory at all: keep at least 30 cm of clearance on every side of the unit, and shut the door of the room you are cleaning.

Accessories for specific situations

  • Pets — a pre-filter wrap is close to essential, and a washable pre-filter model is worth prioritising at purchase.
  • Nursery — wall mount for tip-over safety, plus a unit whose display dims fully at night.
  • Rented flat — castor base rather than wall mount, so nothing is drilled.
  • Construction nearby — a spare pre-filter and an early spare HEPA, because loading will be far faster than rated.
  • Frequent power cuts — a smart plug that restores the previous state on power return, so the unit does not stay off silently.

Frequently asked questions

Are air purifier pre-filter wraps worth it?
Yes, and they are the best-value accessory in the category. At ₹300–₹800 a wrap catches hair, lint and coarse dust before it reaches the HEPA, and it rinses clean in seconds. In a household with pets or heavy street dust it can meaningfully extend a ₹3,000 filter's life.
Can I add a UV lamp to my air purifier?
We would not recommend it. In a domestic purifier's airflow, contact time is too short for a retrofit lamp to inactivate much, and an improperly shielded UV-C source is a real hazard to eyes and skin. If you want UV, buy a unit engineered with it inside a sealed chamber.
Do air purifier fragrance pads affect air quality?
Negatively. Fragrance pads and essential-oil attachments release volatile organic compounds into the air the purifier is filtering, which is working against the purpose of the machine. If anyone in the house has asthma or is sensitive to scents, avoid them entirely.
