Two numbers on an Indian AC listing mislead more buyers than any others. The first is the tonnage in the name. A true 1.5 ton AC delivers 5,275 W of cooling, but units sold in that class are rated anywhere from 4,750 W to 5,460 W — a 15% spread that decides whether a 180 sq ft room stays comfortable at 4 pm. Every AC here shows its rated watts where the brand publishes them, and our room-size advice is calculated from that figure, not from the name.
The second is the star. The BEE star is cut from ISEER, the cooling an AC delivers per unit of electricity across a typical Indian season, and the band for each star is wide: on the inverter splits we compare, 3-star units run ISEER 3.9 to 4.5 and 5-star units 5.05 to 5.85. So we rank on ISEER and declared annual units where brands publish them, and we say plainly where they do not — LG, Voltas and Carrier omit ISEER from their product pages, which makes their efficiency impossible to compare before you buy.
Heat is the Indian twist on all of this. An AC loses capacity as the outdoor temperature rises, and on a top floor in a 45°C city the outdoor unit sits in air hotter than the forecast. The rated ambient temperature — 48°C on some units, 56°C on the best — tells you how much headroom you have. For those rooms, size up one tonnage step as well; our tonnage calculator does both.
How we rank: scores are calculated from each AC's published specification, not assigned by hand, and nobody at BestPurifier has run these units. Cooling performance (25%) comes from compressor type, rated ambient and capacity against nominal tonnage; running cost (25%) from ISEER, or star rating where ISEER is unpublished; value (20%) from price against a typical price for the tonnage, star and type; build (15%) from coil metal, anti-corrosion coating and compressor and PCB warranty; and service (15%) from the brand's AC installation reach.
Every price was checked on 14 September 2026 — on the brand's own store where it sells direct, or at Reliance Digital for Daikin and Hitachi, which show no price. Every photo is the brand's own, used only where the source named the exact model. Marketplace prices on Amazon and Flipkart are often lower in sale weeks, so use the links on each product to compare before you buy. Godrej and O General are not ranked because we could not verify a current price for their models.
