What Is the Safe TDS Level for Drinking Water in India?

What TDS actually measures

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids โ€” the combined concentration of everything dissolved in your water, measured in parts per million. That includes beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium, harmless salts, and potentially harmful dissolved substances, all counted together in one number.

This is the crucial limitation, and it is widely misunderstood: TDS is a bulk indicator, not a safety verdict. Water at 120 ppm consisting largely of dissolved arsenic would read as excellent while being genuinely dangerous. Water at 450 ppm of harmless calcium and magnesium is completely safe to drink. A TDS meter measures conductivity โ€” it cannot distinguish good dissolved solids from bad ones.

Why zero TDS is the wrong target

Some purifier marketing implies lower TDS is always better, and some buyers proudly report 15 ppm output. That is not the win it appears to be.

Demineralised water lacks calcium and magnesium, which contribute a small but real part of dietary mineral intake, and the World Health Organization has published on the drawbacks of drinking demineralised water. It also tastes flat, which has a practical consequence: people drink less of it, and mild chronic under-hydration is a bigger everyday problem than 60 ppm of dissolved calcium ever was.

This is exactly what a TDS controller is for. Set it so your output lands around 60-120 ppm rather than as low as the membrane can achieve.

Tip

Test your purifier's output, not just your input. If output is below 40 ppm, adjust the TDS controller upward. If it is above 150 ppm on high-TDS input, your membrane may be nearing the end of its life.

How to measure your TDS properly

  • Buy a digital TDS meter โ€” around โ‚น300 online. Any reputable brand is adequate for domestic use.
  • Fill a clean glass with tap water, let it stand for a minute, and dip the meter to the marked depth.
  • Test at the same tap at different times of year. Seasonal swings of 300-500 ppm are entirely normal where supply blends municipal and borewell sources.
  • Test your purifier output as well, and log both. That log is how you detect a failing membrane months before anything visibly goes wrong.
  • For anything beyond TDS โ€” arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, iron, bacteria โ€” you need a NABL-accredited laboratory test, typically โ‚น1,500-3,000.

What is the ideal TDS level for drinking water in India?
BIS IS 10500 sets 500 ppm as the acceptable limit and 2,000 ppm as the permissible maximum where no alternative source exists. For taste and mineral content, 50-150 ppm is ideal, and that is what you should target as your purifier's output using a TDS controller.
Is 0 TDS water safe to drink?
It is not acutely dangerous, but it is not ideal. Near-zero-TDS water lacks calcium and magnesium that contribute to dietary mineral intake, and the WHO has published on the drawbacks of demineralised drinking water. It also tastes flat, which tends to reduce how much people drink. Use a TDS controller to keep output around 60-120 ppm.
Does high TDS mean my water is unsafe?
Not necessarily. High TDS may be entirely harmless calcium and magnesium, which affects taste and causes scale but not illness. Conversely, water with normal TDS can contain dangerous arsenic or fluoride. TDS tells you which purification technology you need; only a laboratory test tells you whether your water is safe.
What TDS is too high for a water purifier?
Most domestic RO membranes are rated for input up to 2,000 ppm. Above that you need a membrane rated to 3,000 ppm (such as the AO Smith Z9) or a system with antiscalant dosing ahead of the membrane. Feeding an RO water above its rated input TDS causes rapid membrane fouling and early failure.
