A smart ceiling fan adds app control, voice control or both to a BLDC fan. In practice that means you can set speed and timers from your phone, and say "set the bedroom fan to three" to Alexa or Google Home without getting up.
Be clear about what you are buying, because the words are used loosely. Almost every BLDC fan ships with an infrared or RF remote — that is not a smart fan. A smart fan connects to your home Wi-Fi and is reachable from your phone when you are not in the room. Only the fans on this page do that, on their manufacturers' own description.
This is the narrowest genuinely-verified cluster on the site: most brands market "smart" far more widely than they implement it. We only list a fan here where the manufacturer's own page states app, Wi-Fi or voice control.

What is the difference between a smart fan and a remote fan?
A remote fan has an infrared or RF handset that works in the room, line-of-sight or nearby. A smart fan joins your Wi-Fi, so you can control it from your phone anywhere and link it to Alexa or Google Home. Most BLDC fans have a remote; only a few are genuinely smart.
Do smart ceiling fans work with Alexa and Google Home?
Some do and some only work with the brand's own app. Crompton's IoT models and Superfan's voice models state Alexa and Google Home support on their product pages. Check the specific model — brands vary even within one range.
Does a smart ceiling fan need internet all the time?
No. The remote and the wall switch keep working without internet. You lose app access from outside the house and voice control, because both route through the cloud.
Are smart ceiling fans worth it?
If you already run Alexa or Google Home, or you want schedules and sleep timers, yes. If you only want to change speed from bed, a plain BLDC fan with a remote costs less and does that.
