Under ₹5,000 you can buy genuine microbiological safety. You cannot buy TDS reduction. Any listing at this price claiming to be an 'RO purifier' is either mislabelled or a carbon filter with an RO sticker — a real RO membrane plus pump plus housing costs more than this on its own.
What you can buy, and what is genuinely worth buying: a gravity purifier with a germkill processor or a hollow-fibre UF membrane, which reliably removes bacteria, viruses and cysts from treated municipal supply. So the honest answer depends entirely on your water. If you are on treated municipal supply below 200 ppm, a ₹1,500 gravity purifier solves your actual risk and you should stop shopping. If you are on borewell or tanker water, nothing in this price band will help you — save up, because a mis-bought purifier is worse than no purifier since it produces false confidence.
