How to Choose a Dash Cam in India (2026 Buying Guide)

10 min readPublished 8 October 2026Updated

Why Indian drivers fit a dash cam

  • Evidence in a collision: time-stamped video ends the 'who hit whom' argument at the roadside and with the insurer.
  • Protection against staged accidents and false blame — a known problem in Indian cities, where a camera on the windscreen is a deterrent in itself.
  • Faster insurance claims: clear footage of a third party's fault makes the claim straightforward.
  • Hit-and-run and parking damage: with parking mode, the camera wakes on an impact and records who scraped the car.
  • Disputed challans: a clip with GPS speed and time stamps shows what actually happened at a signal.

Step 1: How many cameras (channels)?

Price ranges are from the dash cams in our catalogue on 8 October 2026.

Front only (1-channel)Road ahead₹1,900–₹12,000 (Garmin ₹16,000–₹20,500)Tight budget; you mainly want front-collision evidence
Front + rear (2-channel)Ahead and behind₹5,600–₹35,000Almost every private car — rear-end shunts are common in Indian traffic
3-channel (front, rear, cabin)Ahead, behind and inside₹7,600–₹40,000Taxi, Ola/Uber, driving-school and fleet cars
Mirror dash camAhead and behind, with a mirror-width screen₹17,000+You want a clear windscreen and a wide rear view

Step 2: Sensor and resolution — what makes a plate readable

Resolution decides how many pixels fall on a distant number plate; the sensor decides whether those pixels are clean at night. A 4K label on a weak sensor can record worse at night than a good 2K camera.

Look for a named Sony STARVIS or STARVIS 2 sensor (IMX335, IMX415, IMX675, IMX678 and IMX662 are the common ones). Then pick resolution: 1080p shows what happened within a few metres; 2K (true 1440p) reads plates noticeably further away; 4K is best for plates at distance and in the rear camera of large SUVs.

Important

'2K' is used loosely in India. Some listings call 2304×1296 '2K' — that is much closer to 1080p than to true 2560×1440. Check the pixel figure in the specification table.

Step 3: Supercapacitor or battery

A dash cam needs a small energy store to finish writing the last clip when the engine stops. A supercapacitor does this and shrugs off heat; a lithium-polymer battery does it too, but degrades and can swell in a car parked in the sun. For India, choose a supercapacitor. See the full comparison in our supercapacitor vs battery guide.

Step 4: Parking mode, GPS, Wi-Fi and ADAS

  • Parking mode: records impacts (and optionally motion or time-lapse) while the car is parked. It needs constant power, which means a hardwire kit to the fuse box or an OBD kit — budget ₹1,800–₹3,200.
  • GPS: stamps speed and location on clips and keeps the clock right. Worth having for insurance and challan disputes.
  • Wi-Fi app: lets you download a clip to your phone at the roadside. 5 GHz Wi-Fi is much faster for 4K files.
  • ADAS alerts (lane departure, forward collision): a bonus on highways, not a reason to choose a camera.
  • Screen or screenless: screenless cameras hide behind the mirror; a screen helps you aim the camera and check it is recording.

Buying mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a lithium-battery camera for a car that is parked outdoors.
  • Using the free or ordinary microSD card from the box for continuous recording.
  • Choosing on the resolution label without checking the sensor.
  • Assuming 'parking mode' works out of the box — on most cameras it needs a separate kit.
  • Mounting the camera where it blocks your view, or low on the windscreen where the wipers do not reach.
  • Buying from an unknown seller with no Indian warranty. Prefer the brand's own store or its listed marketplace seller, and keep the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for when buying a dash cam?
In order: the number of channels you need, a named Sony STARVIS sensor at 2K or better, a supercapacitor rather than a battery, and whether parking mode needs a hardwire kit. GPS and a Wi-Fi app are worth having; ADAS is a bonus.
How much should I spend on a dash cam in India?
₹3,000–₹6,000 buys a good front camera; ₹6,000–₹14,000 a good front-and-rear camera with GPS; above that you pay for 4K on both ends, three channels or 4G. Add the memory card and, for parking mode, a hardwire or OBD kit.
Where should I buy a dash cam in India?
From the brand's own Indian store or its authorised marketplace seller, so the warranty is honoured in India. Each model on this site links to the brand store where one exists, and to Amazon and Flipkart.
