Air Purifier vs Air Conditioner: Your AC Is Not Cleaning the Air

6 min read · Updated

Air purifier

A machine whose only job is removing particles and gases from room air.

Air conditioner

A machine whose job is moving heat out of a room. Its filter exists to keep the evaporator coil clean.

Choose Air purifier if…

  • You want to reduce PM2.5 exposure — the only machine of the two that does this meaningfully.
  • Anyone in the household has asthma, allergies or a respiratory condition.
  • You want protection in winter, which is exactly when North Indian air is worst and the AC is off.

Choose Air conditioner if…

  • You want to be cooler. That is the entire comparison — an AC is not a competing purification product and should not be bought as one.

What is actually inside an AC's filter

Lift the front panel of a split AC and you will find a plastic mesh with openings you can see through. It catches hair, lint, insects and coarse dust — anything that would otherwise coat the evaporator fins and wreck heat transfer. It is a coil protector.

PM2.5 particles are, by definition, under 2.5 microns. They pass through that mesh as if it were open air. There is no version of a standard AC filter that changes this, and washing it more often does not help.

The 'PM2.5 filter' AC models, fairly assessed

Several brands now sell split ACs with an added filtration layer, sometimes described as PM2.5, HEPA-type or an ioniser stage. These are not nothing — there is genuinely more media in the airstream than in a bare mesh — but three things limit them.

First, the media is thin, because an AC's fan is designed for a low-resistance path and a real H13 filter would choke it. Second, the filtration only happens while the indoor unit's fan is running, and on a thermostat cycle that can be half the time. Third, almost no manufacturer publishes a CADR figure for these models, which is the number that would let you compare them with a purifier. Where independent figures exist, they typically land well below an entry-level standalone purifier.

Note

If an AC advertises air purification and does not publish a CADR in m³/h, treat the claim as directional rather than quantitative. A purifier that will not tell you its CADR would not be worth buying either.

Running both, properly

  • Close the room. A sealed room is what an AC wants anyway, and it is also the condition under which a purifier reaches its rated clean-air delivery instead of endlessly treating infiltrating outdoor air.
  • Place the purifier away from the AC's airstream. Sitting it directly under the indoor unit means it samples cooled, already-circulating air rather than the room's stagnant corners.
  • Run the purifier continuously on a low or auto setting rather than blasting it for an hour. Clean air is a steady-state achievement, not an event.
  • Keep the AC filter clean anyway. A fouled coil costs you 10-20% in efficiency and is a mould risk in Indian humidity.
  • In winter in North India, the AC is off and the air is at its worst. That is the season the purifier earns its price.

Frequently asked questions

Does an air conditioner purify the air?
No, not in any meaningful sense. A split AC's filter is a coarse mesh designed to keep dust off the evaporator coil. It catches hair and lint and lets PM2.5 through almost completely.
Do I need an air purifier if I have an AC with a PM2.5 filter?
Generally yes. Those models add a thin filtration layer but rarely publish a CADR, filter only while the fan is running, and cannot match a standalone purifier's clean-air delivery. They help; they do not replace.
Should I run my air purifier and AC together?
Yes — they work well together. The AC keeps the room closed, which is exactly the condition a purifier needs to reach its rated performance. Place the purifier away from the AC's direct airstream and leave it running continuously.
Does an AC bring in fresh air from outside?
Standard split and window ACs recirculate room air and do not introduce outdoor air. That is why CO₂ builds up in a sealed air-conditioned bedroom overnight. A few premium models offer a fresh-air intake; check the specification rather than assuming.
