Air Quality: Purifiers, Filters, Monitors and Humidity Control

Air quality in India is usually discussed as an outdoor problem, which is misleading in one important way: most people spend the large majority of their time indoors, and indoor air is frequently worse. Outdoor pollution infiltrates, and then cooking, incense, mosquito coils, cleaning products and off-gassing from new furniture add to it in a space with limited ventilation.

That has a practical upside. You have almost no control over the air outside your window, and considerable control over the air in your bedroom — which is where you spend eight uninterrupted hours a night.

This section covers the whole category rather than just purifiers: the filtration that actually works and the terminology used to fake it, the consumables that determine long-term cost, the monitors that let you verify anything at all, and the humidity appliances that solve a completely different problem people often confuse with air cleaning. Where we have tested products we rank them; where we have not, we say so and give you criteria instead.

Every air quality category, explained

Each page covers how the technology works, what it genuinely removes, what it costs to run, and where it stops.

Frequently asked questions

Is indoor air quality worse than outdoor in India?
Often, yes. Outdoor pollution infiltrates through windows, doors and gaps, and indoor sources add to it — cooking (frying can push PM2.5 above 300 µg/m³ on its own), incense, mosquito coils, cleaning products and VOCs off-gassing from new furniture. Combined with limited ventilation, indoor concentrations frequently exceed what is measured outside.
What should I buy first for indoor air quality?
A PM2.5 monitor, then a purifier for your bedroom. The monitor costs ₹3,000–₹8,000 and tells you what your actual problem is, whether your purifier works, and which room is worst — which stops you guessing. Then buy one correctly sized true-HEPA purifier for the room where you sleep, before adding units elsewhere.
Do I need an air purifier, a humidifier or a dehumidifier?
They solve unrelated problems. Dust, smoke, pollen and PM2.5 need an air purifier. Dry air below 30% RH — common in North Indian winters — needs a humidifier. Musty smells, mould, damp walls and condensation, common in coastal cities, need a dehumidifier. Measure humidity with a ₹300 hygrometer before assuming which one you need.
How much does it cost to run air purification at home in India?
Electricity is minor: 15–40 W per purifier, roughly ₹80–150 a month running overnight. Filters are the real cost at ₹2,000–₹6,500 a year per unit depending on model and city. Check replacement filter price and local availability before buying — it frequently exceeds the price difference between two models over five years.
