Air Purifiers: How They Work, What Actually Matters, What to Buy

An air purifier is a much simpler machine than its marketing suggests: a fan draws room air through layers of filter media and pushes the cleaned air back out. The quality of the purification comes down to what that media is and how much air the fan can move through it. Ionisers, UV lamps, plasma technologies and app dashboards are all secondary — and in the case of ozone-producing devices, actively counterproductive.

Understanding this matters because it tells you which two numbers to look for and which twenty to ignore. Is the filter a genuine True HEPA or H13? And what is the CADR — the clean air delivery rate in cubic metres per hour? A purifier that answers both honestly will improve your indoor air. One that talks about anything else first usually cannot.

In Indian conditions there is a third practical factor that spec sheets never mention: whether you can actually buy replacement filters in your city, at a price you will keep paying. A purifier whose filters are unobtainable becomes furniture within eighteen months.

How an air purifier actually works, stage by stage

  • Pre-filter — a washable mesh that catches hair, lint and large dust. Cleaning it monthly is the single highest-value maintenance task, because it protects the expensive filter behind it.
  • True HEPA (H13) filter — pleated glass-fibre media that captures at least 99.95% of particles at the most-penetrating size, around 0.3 microns. This is what removes PM2.5, PM10, pollen, dust-mite debris and most bacteria.
  • Activated carbon — a bed of porous carbon that adsorbs gases and odours: vehicle exhaust, cooking smells, smoke, VOCs from new furniture. HEPA does nothing for gases, so carbon depth is what stops a room smelling of diesel.
  • Optional final stages — UV lamps, ionisers or photocatalytic layers. Treat these as supplementary. A well-sealed HEPA plus a thick carbon bed does the real work.

Important

Avoid anything sold as an ozone generator or 'activated oxygen' cleaner. Ozone is a respiratory irritant that can worsen asthma, and health authorities advise against these devices in occupied rooms.

Sizing it properly for an Indian room

Manufacturer coverage figures are measured in a sealed chamber of exactly that size with no ongoing pollution source. Your bedroom has a door that opens, a window that leaks and a city outside, so treat the claim as an optimistic ceiling.

Work from CADR instead. Multiply your room's floor area in square metres by five for a baseline, then apply a pollution multiplier: about 1.6× at AQI 100–200, 2.2× at 200–300, and 3× above 300. A 15 m² bedroom in Delhi therefore wants roughly 225 m³/h, not the 75 m³/h a simple reading of the rule would suggest.

Tip

Verify after you buy: note the PM2.5 reading, shut the room, run on high for 40 minutes and watch the number fall. If it does not drop substantially, the unit is undersized, the filter is spent, or outside air is leaking in.

What an air purifier cannot do

  • It cannot clean a room with the windows open, or an open-plan space from one corner.
  • It cannot remove gases or odours without a real activated-carbon stage.
  • It cannot reduce the outdoor AQI reported by monitoring stations — only your indoor PM2.5, which is what affects you.
  • It cannot remove dust mites living in mattresses and pillows. That needs allergen-proof covers and hot washing.
  • It cannot fix a damp wall. Purifiers capture mould spores; they do not stop mould growing.
  • It is not a substitute for prescribed asthma medication.

There are two genuinely defensible reasons to spend ₹55,000 here, and neither is the one Dyson's advertising leads with. The first is the fully-sealed HEPA H13 system: most purifiers have an H13 filter but a body that lets some air sneak around it, and Dyson certifies the whole machine. The second is formaldehyde, which is a real problem in homes with new engineered-wood furniture, and which Dyson destroys catalytically rather than trapping in a filter you must keep buying.

The Xiaomi 4 moves more air than purifiers costing twice as much, shows you a real PM2.5 number, and takes cheap filters. For a first air purifier, or for the second and third rooms once you have decided you want one everywhere, nothing else makes as much sense.

Most air purifiers pull air from one face, which means placement matters enormously and a unit shoved into a corner underperforms badly. Frequently asked questions

Do air purifiers really work?
Yes — in a closed room, correctly sized, with a filter that is not exhausted. Independent testing consistently shows well-sized HEPA purifiers cutting indoor PM2.5 by 50–90%. What they cannot do is clean a room with windows open, cover a whole flat from one position, or remove gases without an activated-carbon stage.
How long should I run an air purifier each day?
Continuously in the room you occupy most, using auto mode. Overnight in a closed bedroom is the highest-value period, because that is eight uninterrupted hours in one controllable space. Electricity is minor at 15–40 W, roughly ₹80–150 a month.
Is an air purifier or an air conditioner better for air quality?
They do different jobs. An AC cools and dehumidifies; its filter is a coarse dust screen, not HEPA, so it does very little for PM2.5. An air purifier does not cool. For air quality you need a purifier — and running both in a closed room is the most effective combination in an Indian summer.
Where should I place an air purifier?
With clear airflow on all sides, at least 30 cm from walls and furniture, and not tucked behind a bed or inside a wardrobe alcove. Placing it a couple of metres from the bed rather than beside your head reduces perceived noise while still turning over the room's air. Units with 360-degree intake are far less placement-sensitive.
