Cooling reach, not tank size
We rank on air delivery in m³/hr, air throw and rated floor area first. A 160 litre tank only means fewer refills; it does not move more air than a smaller unit with a stronger blower.
Honeycomb over wood wool
Honeycomb pads hold more water per unit of airflow, resist clogging in hard water and can be rinsed rather than replaced. Wood wool is cheaper and is the media most likely to hold odour once it has been left damp.

Does an air cooler work in humid weather?
Not well. An evaporative cooler works by evaporating water into the airstream, so it cools hardest in dry heat and does very little once relative humidity passes about 60%. In coastal cities and through the monsoon it mainly adds moisture. If that describes your summer, an air conditioner or a fan is the better purchase.
Does it need a window open?
Yes, and this is the most common installation mistake in the category. A cooler pushes humid air into the room and that air has to leave. Sealing the room raises humidity until evaporation — and therefore cooling — stops. Keep a window or door open for cross ventilation.
