PM2.5 Monitors: Sensor Types, Accuracy and What to Buy

PM2.5 means particulate matter with a diameter under 2.5 microns. Size is what makes it dangerous: larger particles are largely trapped in the nose and upper airway, while PM2.5 penetrates to the alveoli and can cross into the bloodstream. That is why it is associated with cardiovascular as well as respiratory effects, and why it dominates health-based air quality guidance.

It is also the fraction a HEPA purifier removes most effectively — which makes a PM2.5 monitor the natural companion instrument. It is the only practical way to confirm that the machine in your bedroom is doing anything at all.

Tip

The give-away for a cheap infrared unit is a reading that sits at 0–3 µg/m³ indoors no matter what you do. Real indoor air in an Indian city almost never sits at zero. A monitor that never moves is not a good monitor.

Using a monitor to test your air purifier in 40 minutes

  • Note the starting PM2.5 with the purifier off and the room closed for at least 15 minutes.
  • Run the purifier on its highest setting with the door and windows shut.
  • Record the reading every 10 minutes for 40 minutes.
  • A correctly sized unit with a healthy filter should show a clear, steep fall — often 70% or more from a moderate starting point.
  • If the curve is shallow or flattens early: the filter is spent, the unit is undersized for the room, or unfiltered air is leaking in. Check in that order.
  • Repeat this quarterly. It is the most reliable filter-life test available, and far better than trusting an indicator light.

Known sources of false readings

  • Humidity above roughly 70% — water droplets scatter light like particles, inflating readings. Common during monsoon.
  • Dust on the sensor optics — causes slow upward drift over months. Clean the intake per the manual.
  • Placing the monitor next to a purifier's clean-air outlet — you are measuring the outlet, not the room.
  • Aerosols — deodorant, hairspray, insect spray and cooking oil mist all register as genuine PM2.5, because they are.
  • Incense, candles and mosquito coils — these produce very high real PM2.5. The reading is not wrong; the practice is.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good PM2.5 monitor for home use in India?
Look for a laser scattering sensor, a numeric µg/m³ readout rather than only a colour, and ideally data logging so you can see patterns. Expect ₹3,000–₹8,000. Below ₹3,000 you are usually getting an infrared sensor, which is inaccurate in exactly the low-concentration range you care about once a purifier is running.
How accurate are consumer PM2.5 monitors?
A good laser monitor is accurate enough for the decisions you make at home — is the purifier working, is this room worse than that one, did cooking cause that spike. They are not reference instruments and will not agree exactly with a CPCB station. Judge them on consistency and trend rather than absolute precision.
Why does my PM2.5 reading go up when it rains?
Usually a humidity artefact. Optical sensors count light scattered by particles, and suspended water droplets scatter light the same way, so readings inflate above roughly 70% relative humidity. Rain genuinely washes particulates out of outdoor air, so a large indoor spike during heavy rain is more likely the sensor than the air.
Can I use a PM2.5 monitor to check my air purifier's filter?
Yes, and it is the best method available. Close the room, note the reading, run the purifier on high for 40 minutes and watch the fall. Compare against the same test done when the filter was new. A markedly shallower drop means the filter is exhausted — far more reliable than an indicator light on a timer.
