Assumptions: units = watts × hours × days ÷ 1,000 (or the BEE label figure for a fridge), costed at your tariff. Preset wattages are typical averages, not measurements — an inverter AC draws less once the room reaches the set temperature, so use your model's rated figure for a closer answer.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a 1.5 ton AC use?
A 1.5 ton inverter AC typically averages around 1,000-1,200 W once the room is cool, so about 8-9 units in an 8-hour night — roughly ₹2,100 a month at ₹8 a unit. A 5-star model uses less than a 3-star one of the same tonnage; check the ISEER and annual units on its BEE label.
How much electricity does an air cooler use?
Most desert coolers draw 150-250 W and personal coolers 80-130 W. At 10 hours a day, a 190 W cooler uses about 57 units a month, or around ₹456 at ₹8 a unit — roughly a fifth of what a 1.5 ton AC costs to run.
How many units does a refrigerator use per month?
Read the annual units on the BEE star label and divide by 12. A label showing 250 units a year means about 21 units a month, roughly ₹167 at ₹8 a unit. Larger and lower-star fridges use more.
Is an air cooler cheaper to run than an AC?
Yes, by about five times. But an air cooler only works well in dry heat; in humid coastal cities it adds moisture and cools far less, so the cheaper running cost does not help if it cannot cool the room.
How do I calculate electricity cost for any appliance?
Multiply watts by hours of use, divide by 1,000 to get units (kWh), then multiply by your tariff per unit. Example: a 190 W cooler for 10 hours is 1.9 units, or ₹15.20 a day at ₹8.
