Local supply chemistry varies enormously across India. This is what lets us estimate your water even if you have never measured it.
The most expensive mistake in Indian water purification is buying by brochure rather than by water. Households on soft, treated municipal supply routinely install high-recovery ROs they do not need, strip minerals they were better off keeping, and discard thousands of litres a year to solve a problem their supply does not have. Meanwhile households on arsenic-belt groundwater sometimes install UV purifiers, which do precisely nothing about dissolved arsenic.
Both errors come from the same place: nobody asked what was in the water first. This tool asks the seven questions that most change the answer, combines them with what is known about your city's supply, and tells you what actually fits — including when the honest recommendation is the cheaper machine.
It is not a substitute for a lab test and we do not pretend otherwise. What it is good for is knowing roughly where you stand before a salesperson tells you, and knowing which questions to ask when one does.

What each answer actually changes
Your city sets the baseline. Indian supply chemistry varies more within the country than most people expect — Thiruvananthapuram runs 100-350 ppm and Bikaner 700-2,000 ppm, and the same purifier is correct in neither place. If you do not know your TDS, your city plus your source is what we estimate from.
Your water source is the strongest single predictor. Treated municipal supply is lower in dissolved solids but carries chlorine, which is a carbon-filter problem. Borewell supply varies by depth and season and is where hardness, nitrate and in some belts fluoride and arsenic appear. Tanker supply changes between deliveries, which argues for designing to the worst case.
Your TDS, if you know it, is what decides RO versus UV+UF. Below about 200 ppm an RO is solving a problem you do not have. Above 500 ppm it is genuinely required. Between the two is the band where households most often overbuy, and where a ₹300 test saves ₹8,000.
Taste and smell point at specific contaminants. Salty means dissolved salts and RO. Bitter or metallic can mean dissolved metals and warrants a lab panel. A chlorine or foul smell is a carbon-stage problem, and if it is present at the tap as well as the purifier, it is usually the storage tank rather than the purifier at all.
Hardness is a separate problem from drinking water and your kitchen RO does nothing about it. Scale on taps and geyser elements needs a point-of-entry softener. Hardness also shortens membrane life, so it changes your running cost even when you do not fit a softener.
Household size sizes the storage tank and the purification rate. Under-sized storage is the most common complaint in families of five or more, and it is entirely avoidable at purchase.
Your existing purifier decides whether you need a new unit at all. A three-year-old RO on suitable water usually needs an AMC, not a replacement, and we will say so rather than recommending a purchase you do not need.
City TDS ranges are indicative planning figures compiled from publicly reported CPCB and CGWB-style patterns, not live readings. They vary by locality, borewell depth and season — sometimes by a factor of three within one city. Test your own supply before committing to a purchase.
