Sediment Filters: Micron Ratings, Types and Replacement

The sediment filter is the least glamorous and most economically important component in an Indian water purifier. It is a simple mechanical strainer — usually a spun polypropylene cartridge — and it costs a few hundred rupees. Its purpose is not really to clean your drinking water; it is to protect the expensive things downstream of it.

Sediment abrades an RO membrane's surface and physically blocks flow. Suspended solids also absorb and scatter UV light, so a UV lamp working on turbid water is delivering a much lower effective dose than its rating suggests. Both problems are solved by a component that costs less than a pizza.

This is why our standing advice, when money is tight, is to change pre-filters on schedule and stretch the membrane — never the reverse.

Micron ratings explained

Note the distinction between 'nominal' and 'absolute' ratings. A nominal 5-micron filter captures most particles of that size; an absolute rating guarantees it. Domestic cartridges are almost always nominal, which is adequate for their protective purpose.

Finer is not automatically better. A 1-micron filter on turbid borewell water will clog in weeks, restricting flow and starving the pump. On genuinely dirty supply, a coarse filter followed by a finer one lasts far longer than a single fine one.

Replacement schedule

  • Municipal supply, reasonably clear: every 6–12 months.
  • Borewell or tanker supply: every 3–6 months.
  • During and after monsoon, when turbidity spikes: check monthly and expect shorter life.
  • Immediately after any local pipeline work, which typically flushes rust and silt into the supply.
  • Whenever purifier flow rate drops noticeably — this is usually the sediment filter, not the membrane.
  • A cartridge that has gone from white to brown is doing its job. A cartridge that is brown and restricting flow has finished it.

Important

Do not over-tighten filter housings on reassembly. A crushed o-ring is the most common cause of a leak that appears immediately after a service — and the housing only needs to be hand-tight against a properly seated seal.

Commercial and whole-house sediment removal

At commercial scale, cartridge filters give way to backwashable multigrade sand filters — pressure vessels containing layered gravel and graded sand. Instead of replacing a cartridge, you reverse the flow periodically to flush accumulated solids to drain. This is far more economical at higher flows and is standard as the first stage of any commercial RO pre-treatment train.

For a whole house on silty municipal supply, a 10-micron cartridge filter at the inlet is a low-cost intervention that protects taps, geysers, washing machines and any downstream purifier. Fit it with isolation valves and a pressure gauge either side, so you can see when it needs changing rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What micron sediment filter should I use for my RO purifier?
5 micron is the domestic standard and the right default. On very turbid borewell or monsoon-affected supply, a coarse 20-micron filter followed by the 5-micron one will last far longer than a single fine filter. Do not fit a 1-micron cartridge as your only pre-filter on dirty water — it will clog within weeks and starve the pump.
How often should I change the sediment filter?
Every 6–12 months on reasonably clear municipal supply, and every 3–6 months on borewell or tanker water. Change it sooner if purifier flow drops noticeably, and after any local pipeline work, which typically flushes rust and silt into the supply. This is the cheapest filter in the system and the one whose neglect costs the most.
Does a sediment filter remove bacteria or TDS?
No to both. A sediment filter is a mechanical strainer that removes silt, sand, rust and suspended solids only. It has no effect on bacteria, dissolved chemicals, hardness or TDS. Its value is in protecting the RO membrane from abrasion and keeping water clear enough for UV to work effectively.
Can I wash and reuse a sediment filter?
Pleated cartridges are sometimes designed to be rinsed and reused, and the manufacturer will say so. Spun and melt-blown cartridges are not — they capture particles within their depth, and rinsing does not restore capacity even though the outside may look cleaner. Given they cost ₹150–₹400, replacement is the sensible choice.
