How Much Electricity Does a Ceiling Fan Use?

6 min readPublished 17 September 2026Updated

The only formula you need

Electricity is billed in units, and a unit is a kilowatt drawn for an hour. So: watts × hours per day × days per year ÷ 1,000 gives units a year, and multiplying by your tariff gives rupees. A 75 W fan at 12 hours a day for 210 days is 189 units, which at ₹8 is ₹1,512.

FanWattsPer hourPer month (12 h/day)Per year (210 days)
Old induction75 W₹0.60₹216₹1,512
Current induction50 W₹0.40₹144₹1,008
Entry BLDC35 W₹0.28₹101₹706
Efficient BLDC28 W₹0.22₹81₹565
Lowest verified BLDC25 W₹0.20₹72₹504

Note

At ₹8 a unit. Substitute your own tariff — in most Indian cities the domestic slab runs ₹5-9 a unit, and the ratio between fans stays the same.

Why running an old fan on low barely helps

On a conventional induction fan with a resistive regulator, reducing the speed drops the voltage at the motor and dissipates the difference as heat inside the regulator itself. The meter still sees much of that power. This is why an old fan on speed one can draw nearly as much as on speed five, and why the regulator gets warm.

Electronic step regulators are better, and a BLDC fan is better still: its controller genuinely reduces the power drawn, so speed one really does cost a fraction of speed five. If you habitually run fans on low, that alone is an argument for BLDC.

Fans against air conditioners

A 1.5 ton inverter AC draws roughly 900-1,500 W in normal operation. A ceiling fan draws 28-75 W — between twenty and forty times less. Running fans alongside an AC lets you set the AC two degrees higher, and the fans almost always cost less than the AC saves.

Frequently asked questions

How many units does a ceiling fan consume per month?
Watts × hours per day × 30 ÷ 1,000. A 75 W fan at 12 hours a day is about 27 units a month; a 28 W BLDC fan about 10. At ₹8 a unit that is roughly ₹216 against ₹81 per fan.
Does a ceiling fan use more electricity on high speed?
On a BLDC fan, yes and noticeably — the controller genuinely varies the power drawn. On an induction fan with a conventional regulator, much less than you would expect, because the regulator wastes the difference as heat rather than saving it.
How much does it cost to run a ceiling fan for 24 hours?
A 75 W fan uses 1.8 units in 24 hours, about ₹14 at ₹8 a unit. A 28 W BLDC fan uses 0.67 units, about ₹5.40.
Do ceiling fans use a lot of electricity?
No, compared with almost any other appliance — a fan is 28-75 W against 900-1,500 W for an AC and 150-250 W for a refrigerator. But they run for months at a time, and a home with four old fans still spends about ₹6,000 a year on them, which is why the BLDC swap pays back.
