Mounting: the part people get wrong

  • Height: the blades should sit about 9-10 ft above the floor. Higher and the air disperses before it reaches you; lower and it is unsafe and uncomfortable.
  • Wall clearance: at least about a foot from the blade tip to the nearest wall or cupboard, or the fan buffets and is noisy.
  • High ceilings: use a longer downrod rather than accepting a fan 14 ft up. A fan near the roof circulates air nobody is standing in.
  • Low or false ceilings: use a hugger or low-profile fan, which mounts flush with no downrod. The designer brands cover this far better than the mass brands do.

Important

Check the sweep against your actual plan before ordering. Several premium and imported fans are 1,320 mm (52 inch), which sits between the standard 1,200 mm and 1,400 mm sizes.

One fan or two?

A single ceiling fan throws air usefully over roughly a 12-15 ft circle. Beyond that the far corners of the room get very little, whatever the fan's CMM. For a hall longer than about 18 ft, two fans spaced along the length will feel dramatically better than one large fan in the middle — and two 1,200 mm BLDC fans at 30 W each still draw less than one old 75 W induction fan.

Frequently asked questions

What size ceiling fan do I need for a 10x12 room?
1,200 mm (48 inch). That is the standard Indian size and it suits rooms from about 10x10 up to 12x12 ft. Go to 1,400 mm only if the room is larger than about 12x15 ft or has a high ceiling.
Is 1200mm or 1400mm better?
Whichever matches the room. 1,400 mm moves more air and suits a hall or a large bedroom; in a 10x10 ft room it is uncomfortable on high and wasteful on low. Size to the room rather than buying the largest you can afford.
How many inches is a 1200mm ceiling fan?
About 48 inches. 900 mm is 36 inches, 1,050 mm is 42, 1,400 mm is 56 and 1,500 mm is about 60. Imported fans quote inches, which is why a 52-inch designer fan is 1,320 mm rather than a round number.
What ceiling fan works with a false ceiling?
A hugger or low-profile fan, which mounts almost flush with no downrod. Standard fans hang 10-12 inches below the ceiling on a downrod, which is too low once a false ceiling has already taken 8-10 inches of height.
